The very definition of the word outdated means to be superseded by. If I had simply meant the passage of time I would've used the word 'old'.

I wonder if it has ever occurred to you that your definition of intelligence is based solely on your own, much misguided intellect. I suspect not. That's probably why you have such trouble engaging in a real debate without it deteriorating into a slanging match with added name-calling. Right now, for instance, you seem to be engaged in an exercise of solipsism brought about by your own delusions, rather than attempting further debate. So I win by default at least, though I would prefer to win through argument you can't win an argument with the ignorant.

Just out of curiosity, RedCelt, you are a philosophical student, yes? Have you never heard of the Principle of Charity? I know there are several minor variations but the main gist is an ethical imperative to interpret your opponent's arguments in the manner most beneficial to .... your opponent... when there are weaker or stronger possible interpretations. I'm admittedly bad at it, too... but it really is what marks the difference between civilised (ie. useful) discussion and mere rhetoric and sophistry.

Maybe that holds no interest for you, but personally I like to take more away from discussions (even when I don't change my mind) than the certainty that my opponent thinks I'm an idiot. I mean, I'm quite capable of wondering that about myself without anyone else's input every time I lock my keys in my car or leave my wallet in my other trousers, which... while not quite frequent... does happen often enough to keep my ego at a socially acceptable level. I'm sure Hennessey experience something comparable from time to time. :-P

That was an act of charity, right? Read the thread from the beginning, replacing the 2 of us with random markers. If you don't actively dislike one of the 2 people, you might be less congratulatory. Or perhaps not. Just an idea.

My philosophy (expressed elsewhere) is to treat people how they deserve to be treated. I'm friendly as a friendly-person can be to people who aren't twats. And by a "twat", I don't mean stupid people. There are lots of stupid people in the world - with a whole lot of friendliness thrown in. Stupidity + maliciousness is another matter, entirely.

Dicks get treated like dicks. Justice is a far stronger impetus than charity.

I stopped posting on the sinner because of the tone of certain people, I still read though as it was still at a stage where it could be joked about. I can trace the point I stopped reading every day to the emergence of this red celt chap, seemed like every thread had some diatribe in it, carefully researched and obssessively quoted. Come back for the first time in a year only to find he's still going. Unbelievable. He's about the only internet person I've ever want to study and and observe in real-life to see if he's just as unlikeable. Strange, strange little man.

Well I won't deny that the ignore function would be an absolute godsend. I am genuinely intrigued by people like yourself though, what drives someone to exert such effort and time over so many different topics? This must be the only forum you do it on as there's not enough hours in a day surely? Unless you genuinely consider it a hobby? I can see the appeal of debate etc, but normally people retain at least a degree of specialisation don't they? What drove me away was the fact that there was barely a thread going that you hadn't had an opinion to put forth on! Its as if from an early age you were told that apathy or passiveness was absolutely unacceptable in every single circumstance, even the crucial debate of whether white is, in fact, black. Would you stand in a pub and engage people in debate about whatever they wanted to discuss or is the freedom and scope of the net? I assure you these questions are entirely free of facetiousness - for instance I wonder whether you've ever actually conceded a point or felt yourself swayed by an opponent (for unwittingly or not your tone is inherently competitive)? If so I applaud for that is at least the result and sign of good debate rather than the stubborn brand of contrarianism that seemingly alienates you. Now, sweepstakes on which specific sentences are neatly spliced and quoted? [Even money on the finale being a cutting one-liner answering this one]
