I have set decided to visit St Andrews on 12 March, but I didn't know I had to provide my own accomodation. Does anyone know of a cheap place to stay? I'm a bit short on cash.

Your visiting day will only last during office hours so you shouldn't need to be in St. Andrews for more than one day unless you want to stay longer. Hope you enjoy your visiting day.

Hmm, depends where you're travelling from. When i came up, i stayed in Falkirk if i remember correctly in a hotel there called 'Formula 1". That was only about 20 quid a night, and it was really nice for the money. And the rooms can sleep 3. You would need a car though.

Well, I considered only staying in the country (I'm from the States) for a just a few days, allowing only time for the Visiting Day. But the price for a plane ticket from the dates of 11 March to 13 March are just plain ridiculous!!! Something like 2300 US$! So the cheapest route to take is to buy a weeklong ticket, which is a little over 400 US$.

I also heard that St Andrews rents out dorms for a short amount of time. Is this true?

I've been in there and had a friend stay there and it looks fantastic! Very bright, clean, cozy. I think it's £11 a night.

But yeah, i guess if you can put up with a messy kitchen for a few days, you can stay here.

Well, thanks for all the advice. I've found out that I won't be able to visit St Andrews until April, though. More money problems. Will that space in Fife Park still be available? And has anyone head of a B&B called Hazelhead?

Ermm, i dunno when the space might be filled by another student. Although, i assume it won't be. I know this isn't the best way to plan something, but you're best leaving it to nearer the time. Never heard of that B&B - sorry.

Well, St. Andrews must get a lot of tourists from April on through the summer! I was checking out the bookings for other B&B's online, and many were full! Anyway, I'm trying to re-book for 13 or 26 April.

Rennie, you did the Visiting Day before, right? What was it like? The classes in particular. Anyone else feel free to ring in on these questions.

Ermm, well when i went on the visiting day i actually arrived pretty late and missed all the organised things and just walked round the town and conducted my own tour. It was nice to come and see what St Andrews is like, but i wouldn't bother travelling from the States to see it. I'd just assume that you will like it, i don't know anybody who didn't/doesn't

Also try checking out http://www.pilmourhotel.co.uk/ it's fairly cheap and realtively high quality. Also, it's a pub as well so you'd get to meet some students at night.

If you check out St. Andrews web site www.saint-andrews.co.uk there is an accommodation link with loads of B&Bs including Hazelhead. Good luck!

yeah i checked out both guesthouses and they are a both a bit above the range i would like to pay...by the way, what is there to do in STA during the day? please don't mention golf...i hate golf

There aint much to do really here. Just plan your day along the lines of lazing around doing nothing (like the rest of us), unless you like walks down the beach or looking at old castles/cathedrals.
