A new hard skulled trencher will set you back somewhere in the region of £120 if you buy it direct from E&R.

£ 120! Is this a quotation from the Edinburgh branch? The last time I checked, squares were £ 30 at most and velvet doctors' bonnets used to be £ 80. I shudder to think what the price is now!

You might, during your fight, point out to E&R the irony of them telling you what your own formal dress needs might be when they are a company which still has a full mock up of the official garb of the Order of St Patrick in a prominent display case marked as available for sale.

Well the Order is still extant ... :D

I remain of the view, however, that wing collars have no place in academic dress although would certainly be prepared to be persuaded otherwise. I try to retain an open mind. I was, to return to the subject at hand, once of the view that marcella bow ties had no place in academic dress (due to a coversation many years ago with exnihilio). I understand that he, has since relaxed his position on this question. So have I.

Exnihilo and I have often discussed the marcella vs silk issue. I think I tend towards marcella. However, on the subject of wing collars, I enter into evidence this:

I still favour plain, white. If it was good enough for Sir Steven Watson, it's good enough for me. I have a fear that in this age when few people have complete wardrobes that wearing marcella bow ties in the day time looks like I think there no distinction with the evening. That, and the fact that so many people wear a plain white shirt with their evening bow that it might again look as though one didn't know the difference when wearing the same with academic dress. Hence my tending to favour a plain white, with detatchable wing, shirt and a plain white tie.

I don't have the receipts anywhere to hand, but I'm pretty darned sure I paid £113 for my hard-skulled square about 4 years ago.

A new hat for a doctor currently retails at £129. I didn't bother buying it, as I was so utterly utterly disappointed with it qua headgear.

Regarding the matter of tassels, ongoing. Does anyone feel suitably detatched from their semi-bejant tassel and their tertian's, to trade it for a piece of paper with a picture of HM The Queen on?

Either that, or I have to order from the States, with their godawful tassels one would be hard pushed not to trip over.

Ede & Ravenscroft will sell you tassels: I got mine last year (admittedly, in May, so it took about sixteen months twixt wandering in to ask and finally getting them, with numerous calls and visits in between). They cost twelve quid each, and I would recommend that you ask them to gave you navy and gold tassels, since my bejant and tertian ones seem to be closer to Nanking (spectrum) blue and primrose. Which nobody wants. One concerned chapel-goer advised me to get new ones, adding, "It was never like this in Principal Irvine's day..."

The points of his collar have gone a bit wrong.

No they haven't. A bow tie may be fastened such that its wings fall either infront or behind the points of the collar. The former merely happens to be the dominant style to-day.

In the light of this and Mr Wilson's earlier submissions, it seems I must consider altering my position. I did say that I try to maintain an open mind on such matters. After all this, in the manner Paul on the road to Damascus, am I to convert?

On the subject of hoods, I note that the Bedelus wears a hood. Is this granted as part of his Uniform, or is it earnt academically in the manner of ordinary hoods, or is it honourary?

Indeed it was earned - was it not M.A. (Hons)? I don't remember off the top of my head whether the evening degree yields a general...

Amusing trivia, for me anyway: the Beadle and I received our degrees at the same ceremony, along with noted literary heavyweight JK Rowling.

I had no idea that the applications were even open for tickets, let alone had been, and were now closed. Alas, I guess I shall not be in attendance.

A casual reading of the latest press release on the subject of the installation would suggest that there are tickets left. Odd that there is no mention of a lottery now.

People, people, people (to quote the great Dr Motley). If we're to stick to our previous standards of 1,000 posts each year, we're going to have to up our game significantly over the next six months.

Perhaps people may wish to offer observations and comments on what they will be wearing to Sir Menzies's installation? Or rail against the iniquity of not getting a ticket. Whatever.

I would rail against the iniquity of not getting a ticket but I didn't ask for one. Can I continue to rail against their bizarre system instead?

It is certainly your right so to do.

Incidentally, if tickets are now being offered to the general public, did anyone apply for a ticket and NOT get one?

I could get a ticket, but am already signed up to a course on that particular day. Would it be possible to move the installation to Sunday?

(Monday would be fine also)
