hmm...the main question being, what sort of socks would you wear with them Mr Eliot Wilson?
?

That is a rather ankle-centric view. I would have said the colour of the accompanying trousers is of greater importance than the socks.

Perhaps the above was posted by Dr Lang, noted collector of novelty socks, having finally stumbled on this forum.

Yes, novelty socks and foreign wives are the two things he likes to collect.

Thank you, Mr Renouf. I am reassured.

Hmm, can't say I'm much of a fan, but each to their own on this one.

I just had a pair of slips made for me by Ede & Ravenscroft in Burlington Gardens. £55 I seem to remember and the tailor will fit the buttons on the vest for you too. Truly superb. I get married this Friday and they are what makes my morning dress truky finished. White only I recommend.

I find they're a shoe that always, if not kept well, look shoddy.

If they're a decent pair, then it's all good.

That's good to know about slips as well. And congratulations John; all the very best!

Are you wearing a slip to your waistcoat in your facebook profile picture, by the way, Eliot?

Have the civil service been letting you drink over lunch again, Donald?

I fear that, permission or no, there would still be drinking over lunch for Mr Renouf.

I know I had to when I worked for the Rural Payments Agency.

It isn't actually forbidden! The guidance on general standards of conduct just says that instances of "improper behaviour" would include "unrestrained consumption of alcoholic drink before or during the working day". It would also include "misuse or abuse of RPA's e-mail or intranet, and/or external internets" (their italics). Does that include posting on The Sinner?...

I'm sure it could be argued that engaging in intelligent debate on the sinner fortifies oneself for the hard slog against... just whatever it is you do in there, thereby increasing your productivity.

Lunchtime boozing may also be susceptible to a similar arguement.

My manager doesn't quite agree when I'm slumped over the desk in an alcoholic stupor...

I've just bought a few new shirts, and I've always just used the plastic collar stiffners, but this time I was tempted by the metal ones.

Is there any real advantage to paying for these over using the free plastic ones?

They're heavier, and you'll forget to take them out. The weight will make them fall somewhere, and you'll lose them and buy new ones. It will make you a more careful drunk.

The metal ones, especially if you forget to remove them, can do horrible things to a shirt in the wash. If you go for metal, and you're confident of not losing them, go for silver. Personally, I favour mother of pearl.

Are you perchance referring to the incident with Alex S's washing machine?

I would say that there is as it keeps your collar stiffer more than plastic will do. Most mens shirts have a plastic collar stiffener in, and after a while your collar will start to bend and deform. A metal stiffener will stop this.
