Some firms, like Charles Tyrwhitt, supply brass ones free with the shirts. That said, Hawes and Curtis provide thick plastic ones, which are perfectly adequate. Mother-of-pearl is also excellent; mine, as it happens, were courtesy of exnihilo, for which I still give thanks.

TM Lewins will sell you a pair of collar stiffeners for the eminently reasonable sum of £5.00.

Alex S-- this is the second time today his name has come up. This first was that he is related to a job I'm applying for.

Lewin's collar stiffeners are a different shape to everyone else's and are also too long for their spread-collar shirts.

I very rarely bother to use the things, myself.

Linen suits - are these still alright to wear, or are they a touch too colonial?

A Suit for Graduation

Postby OhhMy on Thu Jun 28, 2007 1:59 pm

Hello, I am going to start saving for a suit for my graduation. I want to look as good as I can. I will probably be able to afford about £300 for a suit. I have a few questions....

1) What colour should the suit be? (black or dark grey?)

2) Where is the best place to get a suit for that price...

Many thanks in advance

(Apologies for spelling etc.)

Seconded. Though, they give your Johnsons card a workout.

You can always combine with a panama hat and go to live in Huddersfield.

Having returned from Sri Lanka (Ceylon). I can say you get some funny looks walking about in a linnen/silk suit and wearing a panama. You also have to get it dry cleaned every evening but that is easy in a world where the pound is so strong.

Well of course - you should have been wearing a bush shirt, puttees and a sola topee.

Quick question - what are those bands (which resemble expanding watchstraps) that are worn around the upper arms called? (and, for a bonus point, what is their purpose?)

I tried to find some pictures but looking through all of your facebook albums drew a blank.

I don't know if they have a special name, but they're to keep the shirt sleeves in place.

I've always found that the sleeve is kept in place rather well by its attachment to the body of the shirt. Might just be me though.

"Armbands" or specifically "St George's Bands" since those made by that company are by far the most common.

Yes, that's right, my stepfather wears them whenever we go out for a meal, he reckons that without them, his cuffs get in his food.

I just think they look quite fun. I imagine it's a passing fad though - Keith Allen was sporting some the other day and he is a massive legend.

I think they look like you are trying too hard at formal dress, which is a shame as I believe formal dress should look fairly effortless. However, like so many matters I believe it is a matter of opinion.
