Virus

I've got a virus on my computer, and I can't seem to delete it. It says that it can't be located because it's in an archive. I tried to find it myself, but it said that it had probably changed location. What can I do to find it and delete it? Thanks in advance,

if it is a high risk virus then the stinger proogram may be able to take it off.

best way to find it is via google.
type in: stinger.exe virus and then press return. click on the first link, which should bring you to a page to download it.

Or get the free version of AVG which is better than most others anyway: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

And if you're in a hall by the way then just get your RCR to either give you advice or come and fix it, or if your not and it's a laptop then you can take it into the ITS helpdesk in the library.

And if not still, then some more info perhaps? Like what kind of virus etc.

The university provides you with a free license for F-Secure. Runs constantly, so you should never get a virus in the first place

Argh don't use F-Secure, it's crappy. A lot of people in my hall (under advise from ITS I think) had it and the RCR was not chuffed about having to continually fix viruses that kept reinfecting computers. Use avg (free) but in my experience the rest are pants (including norton).

Remember and use a firewall and update both virus scanner and windows if that's what you have regularly though. I've always used avg and kerio and have never had a virus ever which is pretty good especially as both programs are free

Hi, thanks for all the advice. I've run all the anti-virus software mentioned, and they all identify the virus as TrojanDownloader.Win32.Small.dg, but all say that they can't perform any actions on it because it is unlocatable as it is in an archive. They give the location as C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\16HQZWHD\loader[1].cab\loader.exe
Our hall has no RCR and I'm very wary of taking my computer to IT services as they accidentally deleted my sound drivers last time! What would happen if I deleted all of my temporary internet files? Would the virus be deleted, or would I not be able to connect to the internet etc? I wish I knew more about computers!

Deleting the temporary internet files is risk-free - that directory is just where the computer stores web pages as you visit them, and not to do with how your computer accesses the Internet at all. If you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options, then select "Delete Files" in the middle section.

A trojanDownloader eh? That's a dialer and you can only get them from clicking "yes" or "ok" on an xxx site. Try to avoid doing that in future and you'l be fine, but I'm being serious thats the only place you can get them.
