Hi,

Just about to put my second year module choices through, I need a little bit of help making a decision.

I need a 20 credit first-year module to fill out my first semester (I've got a 30 credit CS module and a 10 credit Philosophy module). I've narrowed the remaining 20 credits down to either MT1008 or FM1001.

I'm not much of a mathematician (I failed MT1001 :-( ), so would MT1008 be too difficult? It looks easier due to no essays and no exam...

But what's film studies like?

Thanks.
Malcolm

The MT1008 course (at least when I did it one and a half years ago) has two main points to take into consideration:

1) For every course-assessed piece of work, you are allowed to take in whatever notes you like.

2) The whole of MT1008 is course-assessed.

There is of course, the major disadvantage - the statistics program R. It's truly horrible to use, and you will be required to at least pretend to understand the statistical methods used in it.

To be fair, though, I haven't taken FM1001, so it might be an idea to wait for someone to comment on that as well.

This destruction is the only tale we tell,
White is black, black is white,
Right is wrong and wrong is right,
Nothing ever feels this cold inside your heart...

FM1001 is fairly easy- you do have a fair bit of reading from the set textbook, but it's not too stressful. Plus, the 20 mark multiple choice quiz is a bonus!

FM1001 is alot of reading, but it is a really good course. The only thing would be your second semester, would you not have to follow on from a course you took in the first semester? i.e that would mean having to take FM1002, which is so disappointing compared to FM1001.

I happen to disagree. I would say that the topics covered in this second semester are far more film studies-like; all of the different film movements are what I expected to study in this module.

Well i just find the lectures less stimulating than last semesters and some of the films hard going - although I do appreciate thats likely down to the nature of the module.

The lack of stimulation in lectures is a valid criticism- all down to this modules lecturers if you ask me and nothing to do with content.

If you're looking for stimulating lectures and the philosophy module you've put down is taught by Lisa Jones and get it changed swiftly. I've never felt less stimulated in my life...
