Why do I read it? Why? All it does is lead me to believe that the world is full of idiots and arseholes. I blame insomnia. It makes me do silly things which up my blood pressure.

is this the BBC's have your say?

I have a red at the Sun's discussion boards every now and then. It's good to remind casual xenophobia every now and then. it reminds you that its important to vote.

Yeah the BBC's I know what it does to me but for some reason when I cant sleep at 4am it seems like a good idea. Some of them on the argument about the ban on the genetic experiments really really got me going last night.

Does staying up late and reading crap websites cause spelling and grammatical errors?

It's no wonder this country is going down the pan.

You may kindly throw yourself off a bridge as I have more important things to worry about than my grammar.

It's not mad. The 'I have more important things to worry about than my grammar' argument just Does Not Wash.

We all have things to worry about, but that doesn't mean we should all gaily let our spelling go to pot.

It's like...reversing over a five-year-old because you had 'more important things to worry about than checking the rear view mirror'.

I still say that grammar on an internet forum is in no way as important as safely driving a car - my spelling or lack thereof is not going to kill someone - and if i dont feel like running a proof read at 3am...oh dear what a pity the world has come to its end. if u lik i wil start typin lik this but that actually takes more concentration for some reason. I am not implying that others dont have things like exams and relatives dying and that they still manage to give a damn about pedentry. But personally you can kiss my ass.

I'd rather not, thanks.

You can write as atrociously as you like; it's your problem not mine. My beef was with Senethro's claim that commenting on bad spelling and grammar is mad.

I used to get quite aerated by poor spelling & grammar, however, I've now realised that sincer written language is an artificial construct that we are *technically* not built for naturally - therefore, some people are just not great at it, and never will be. I'm not particularly good at more sophisticated maths or sewing - but would be pissed off if anyone berated me over that.

Language maybe an integral part of our lives, but that's because of the way our society developed. Some people don't master all the intricacies - leave them be.

You don't think it's important to be able to communicate effectively?

As a future doctor, I would hope that you would be able to convey important facts about people's health, clearly and concisely.

Personally, I think this is VITAL!

I didn't say that I had difficulties with grammar/spelling. I was merely pointing out the fact that extreme nit-pickery over grammar is a presumption that in-depth handling of language is innate, which it is not.

I'd like to think that most of us here are intelligent enough to glaze over (relatively) minor mistakes in people's writing to be able to "get the point".

Funny. This started out as a rant against the tedious and moronic discussions you get on Have Your Say, and yet it quickly turned into the kind of tedious and moronic discussion you get on Have Your Say. Another one of life’s delicious ironies.

There is a difference between communicating effectively and being absolutely 'correct' in your spelling and grammar. The first does not necessarily require the second. Look up 'communicative competence'.

But isn't "communicative competence" to do with one's second language?

I'm pretty sure that the majority of the people on this board have English as their FIRST language.

I'm with Somehwere ONly we Know on this one - I want my doctors to be able to prove they know what they're talking about.
