Student Parking Permits

Postby yakman on Wed Sep 26, 2007 12:17 pm

Has anyone who e-mailed the stupark people had a reply or indeed a permit sent to them yet? I've seen staff in our department receiving them today, but heard of any students.

Anyone know anything I don't?

I remember something was mentioned about having a car near the end of matriculation - alas, I don't have a car, so I can't really give any more details, but it's possible that the permits were being distributed there.

But still at night, when darkness rules again,
Whispering shadows creeping through the lanes,
Evil creatures of the expelled magician,
Oh, it's a fight you'll never win...
Somewhere in chaos we all find ourselves,
This destruction is the only tale we tell,
White is black, black is white,
Right is wrong and wrong is right,
Nothing ever feels this cold inside your heart...

If only! If you were lucky, you got a slip of paper giving the web page with the regulations and the email address to apply for a permit.

The regulations, which apply from Monday, can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/staff/tech/Carparkingpermits/Carparkingregulations/ and the lists of car parks covered are at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/staff/tech/Carparkingpermits/Scheduleofdesignatedparkingareas/.

To apply for a parking permit, email stupark@st-andrews.ac.uk detailing your name, term time and home addresses, student ID number, and car registration number.

Hmm, so apparently the student permits are only good for parking in Albany Park, DRA/Fife Park and New Hall? All the rest appears to be staff/court/visitors/disabled people only.

Yes, the permits are, in fact, completely worthless unless you live near those halls. I shall not be telling the univesity that i have a car with me, nor will i be applying for one of their silly permits either.

Well, I applied for a permit back in August (believing them to be a little more useful than they apparently are), and it just arrived through the door today.

When the Council start charging for parking in most of the town centre - including The Scores, the rest of North Street, Queen's Gardens & Terrace, the Hope Street area, and even Petheram Bridge - you may suddenly find that being able to use the free car parking at New Hall is much more useful!

See http://www.fifedirect.org.uk/uploadfiles/publications/c64_lfmczk.pdf for an outline of the Council proposals.

Parking

Postby Mad4surfing on Thu Sep 27, 2007 4:58 pm

I think that if you want to do anything outside St andrews you may need a car. However I think driving around within St Andrews when you're not carrying a large load or when you're not disabled is pretty digraceful. It's small place and quite nice to ride around. I welacome car parking charges and restrcting permits.

This topic came up before when the permits were first mentioned. Many of the people who have cars here do have them for a reason other than just driving around St Andrews (let's face it, they cost so much to have, just having them for driving to lectures wouldn't be worth it). And the university's stance that we were basically wrong to want to have a car was just ridiculous.
