So...

It appears that we are being paid by cheque this quarter. It was bloody nice of the university to tell us.

Do they not realise that our bank accounts operate in exactly the same way as everyone elses? Mortgages/Rents/Insurance/Phone/TV License/Gas/Elec - all come out and if theres no money in the account we get fined.

Do you think we would have any legal case against the uni to reclaim these charges?

Really? Is that official or just rumor?

Depends what your arrangement with the University was.
How do they normally pay you?

If they don't fulfill their side of the bargain and don't pay you by the date they said they would, then you may have a case.

If you do get fined by the bank, there's still the option to claim the fine back directly from the bank (as the fines tend to be unfair penalties).

Speak to your bank before your bills start coming in - they may be able to arrange a temporary extension of any overdraft facilities you may have.

Its official in as much as my student statement says paid by "CHEQUE", as does three of my friends', all from different departments.

The usual arrangement was payment by BACS on the 1st of every third month (quarterly). My first ever payment (which you might expect to be a cheque) was even by BACS. Atleast two departments knew nothing about this change, and from what I understand (word of mouth) they are the ones who are supposed to be delivering the cheques :S

Hi All,

I've spoken to the finance department about this and been down to 79 North Street and they both tell me to complain to a man called ERIC GILLESPIE. His e-mail address is accessible via webmail address book.

Apparently the finance department have had a new system installed. This was two weeks ago. They admitted to me on the phone that they had NOT told us about it.

Feel free to contact Eric Gilliespie with complaints.

I think this is a disgusting way to treat postgradutes.

Thanks
Notorious

Update

So I finally found someone who received a cheque, but guess what, it wasn't signed. If this wasn't so serious I'd piss myself laughing.

That's bad form. Mine were always BACS. Cheques are useless, unless they are of the Treasury variety that allow one to have the cash there and then without a clearing period.

What you will find, however, is that the University can be quite good about authorising the immediate cashing of their cheques.

Surely it is more expensive (and worse for the environment) to pay by cheque than by BACS!

The Eric Gillespie called this morning! And here is my account:
- there will be a student memo coming out tomorrow!
- there will be also a staff memo coming out on errr... Friday (I think)
- from now on the first payment of the year will be by cheque. This is to ensure
that the student is actually still a student and has registered with the
university. For students on field trips will be specific arrangements in place.
- No, we will not be paid by cheque from now on! Only once a year at the
beginning of the year (just to confirm and stress the previous point)
- the next payment will be in January as BACS
- the change however will that from then on we will be paid monthly

For any students in difficulties shall contact Eric Gillespie or make an
appointment with the North Street reception.
Cheers for your attention!

Scholarships also appear to be paid by cheque, instead of BACS, this year (or semester at least).

UPDATE: Here the kind of official version - what I was just told by Eric Gillespie by phone:
- there will be a Student Wednesday memo tomorrow explaining things in detail!
- there will be also a staff memo coming out as well.
- from now on the first payment of the year will be by cheque, which has be picked up in person with ID to prove that you have registered/matriculated
- exception of the rule - people doing field work - there will be some way of dealing with this in place
- Future payments will not be 3 monthly anymore but monthly as BACS. Starting January 2008.

Should you have any concerns or questions, particularly concerning payments of rent etc. contact Eric Gillespie directly or arrange an appointment at the North Street reception.
