Secret St. Andrews Societies

Postby James on Wed May 07, 2003 4:38 pm

My curiosity, and only my curiosity, has been aroused by the S&MSoc Thread ...

What other underground societies are there in this place?

I'm not requiring "outing" of members of such groups or anything like that, I'm just plain curious about what these other groups could be.

There's the cheese toasty society who held their "cheesy" meetings on b-floor in uni-hall last year.

I don't know. Is the Potholing Club still going strong?

Other than that, I suppose there is the Baudelaire Club.

Tally ho! Al.

There's also another society that I know about, but I have been sworn to secrecy. I'm not a member of it, and I don't know any current members (or even whether it still exists)...

There's JengaSoc, which had a few meetings last semester in 8 Albany Park but seem to have fallen into a lull....

They can't be terribly secret if people are divulging their existance here...

Pyrosoc? They're certainly not affiliated. Because they burn things. I'm not a member. Probably should be since me and my flatmate enjoy burning teddybears and Barbie dolls...

And as for Jenga soc- make it truth or dare jenga- that will draw the punters in...

i still think someone should start a WANKsoc. i'm sure it could attract plenty of members to come & fill it.

well there were discussions about PornSoc, which would rent venue 1 and use a big projector screen for "showings", setting up loads of reclining chairs and giving out free packets of tissues.

And then, when the iMovies come around again.....

Pyrosoc are not affiliated because they burn and explode pressurised containers... or so legend has it...

Still going strong tho, but not very meetings in recent times i've heard.

That's not a society, that's just friends playing a game. That'd be like me saying PlaystationSoc meets in Gatty 2 every afternoon. The same goes for Pyrosoc. Loads of people enjoy getting together with their mates and burning things, the number of bonfires (and the various lighters, condoms full of petrol etc... that get thrown onto them) on the beach at gatty will attest to that.
The difference between a society and not just a group of mates is that other people can come along and join, the point of affiliation is partly that it's the easiest way to let people know about the society. People like 'PyroSoc' are just guys sad enough to think that they're doing something clever and special, a kind of a "Look at us, aren't we great!? No you can't play." type effect.

So noone has heard about it. Pity. It really is secret. To expand: black tie dinner party society that meets once in a blue moon, invite only, 7 boys 7 girls, has been meeting in London mostly, also Nepal is I recall. Last one in St Andrews was in 1999 but the members are still here. It is about educating first years in the way of having a good dinner party, drinking good wine and eating well. They once did a hitchhike to amsterdam, and a day of decadence.

"People like 'PyroSoc' are just guys sad enough to think that they're doing something clever and special, a kind of a "Look at us, aren't we great!? No you can't play." type effect. "

you're wrongly assuming that we are capable of thought.

We've actually said in the past if anyone wanted to go have a bonfire with us they're welcome. We've never tried to be a formal society.

and since when do we think we are doing something clever and special. "Pyrosoc" was just a joke. We were having regular bonfires and decided to give it a name and document it and make a website just for a bit of fun when we had nothing to do. It was an excuse to practise web design.

That's hardly sad, it was just a bit of fun.

Taking it seriously to a point where you describe us as sad, and you think that we're doing it for a "look at us, aren't we great" type effect... when you dont even know us...

...that's really what's sad. and just a bit pathetic and judgemental.

hahaha, i was just about to post exactly the same thing eviltwin, but i see you've already written it :)

I'm not sure that the far end or what ever you're called realises how sad he comes across as in that post by even attempting to take us seriously.

Yes, this is making me sad in the same way i guess, but i feel bad for the guy.

PS anyone can join; you just need to use your head. There have been many involved that i know not the names/occupations of. The only thing that unites us is that we think you smell.....badly......yes you.

I have no idea what Pyrosoc is, but I assume that 'the underscore farwall' tried to join and wasn't allowed in or something? That would explain why he/she has singled out Pyrosoc as being "sad" and not any of the other secret societies that have been mentioned. I assume you two (Evil-thing and vegetator) are "members," perhaps you can tell me if this is true?
