Christopher Eccleston is the new Doctor Who

I'm not entirely convinced about them bringing back the series but this strikes me as a good choice.

What do you reckon?

Dr Who was a winning programme for the BBC for more than 25 years. When the producers were trying to axe the show in the early 80's and moved it from it's traditional Saturday tea-time slot to mid week (against Coronation Street) it was still attracting a good 10million viewers and has been the most successful programme put in the slot.

Don't know how I feel about the programme going back on the air though - for me it was a part of my time in primary school and I think that any attempt at the show now would be a shabby job.

I thought that Eddie Izzard was going to be the new Dr Who?

Dunno about bringing the series back - I'm a huge Who fan, but what makes it is the quality of the writing. Get that right and it'll be great, otherwise no. I'll reserve judgement till I see the first epidsode.

I thought Richard E. Grant was going to be the next Doctor, because he's the one who's been on the new webcasts. I'd heard the Eddie Izzard rumour, and I'm glad it's not him, because much as I love his comedy I don't think he'd be a good Doctor.

Well a guy from the League of Gentlemen and the writer of Coupling are two of the team writing1 third of the series. Two thirds is apparently being written by the Russel T Davies guy? Thats not bad talent wise, anyway.

Anyway I'm looking forward to it, it'll be the first time BBC1 have put something different on tv (different from all the crappy gardening programs, diy, antiques, UK's Best Cabbage type programmess, and Lottery "Extravaganzas" with washed up GMTV presenters), and the first Sci-Fi the BBCs made in years. The only thing I've ever watched on BBC1 for the last few years has been HIGNFY.

Agree completely that it is the quality of the writing that makes or breaks a Dr Who story - that's why we got some classics like "The Green Death" and some disasters like "The Happiness Patrol".

Wonder if another series would be given it's Saturday tea-time slot back?

I wanted Gary Oldman.

He'll have a lot to live up to - in that Eccleston will have to be a new Tom Baker if the series is to last but it's nice to see the show is making a comeback, I just hope they learn from their past mistakes.

At least with Eccleston they're:

a) Not going to play it purely for laughs (and by doing so be completely unfunny c.f. Sylvester McCoy)
b) Not going to camp it up too much (a little is okay but not to the extent of Colin Baker)
c) He'll probably be the least posh Doctor, which will at least be different

I think he'll do a good job. It will surely has to be better than the awful Paul McGann version they made a few years ago.

Who is Chris Eccleston?! All I can say is they better have the same theme music otherwise I'm rising in protest! They better not fiddle with it either (eg give it the 2000 era make over) the original is the only music to have to introduce the good doctor!

We can't determine how the new doctor is going to be yet. The Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker doctors were by and large unfortunate but it was done as a reaction to the circumstances at the time. Having just lost Tom Baker after seven years the new doctors were trying to "bring the show into the 1980s". In retrospect though and sure that most Who fans would prefer it if they had left the show as it was!

I think that any new show would probably try and repeat the early Jon Pertwee era in that it would be slightly more serious and thought provoking - like "The Silurians" - if they have learned from some of the distasters made in the late eighties
