MT1003 and the unhelpfulness of the Maths department.

Postby Bryn on Sat May 22, 2004 1:09 pm

*sigh*

I'm really worried and almost certain that I'm going to fail MT1003 now. I don't have any decent lecture notes to speak of, despite asking Dr Grundy several times for him to put a copy of them in the library. I can't seem to get access to any decent text books on the topics covered considering the Maths/Physics library is shut over the weekend, and they hoard all the decent books so that the main library doesn't have any (trust me, I was sitting in the library on the floor looking at maths books for quite a while, there was nothing decent, or newer than 1950).

So this is me wanting to actually revise for this exam, but not really being able to. Yay.

Yeah i totally agree. They're the only module that hasn't posted many lecture notes online.
They could have done what Dr Olsen did last semester and make you pay a pound for each set of notes, which i thought was a good system.

Not as bad as above, but i still havn't got back the results of my last MT1002 class test. The tutor says shes in 9-5 but the last 3 times i've been she's nowhere to be seen. Its driving me mad.

Also, i do sympathise with you but.. not all of the things i've done (including MT1002) have had lecture notes available for the whole course. I know its a bitch but shouldn't you have enough notes of your own? Remember, the maths department don't have to put anything online.

No, my lectures notes are far from adequate or complete. I know they don't have to, but frankly I think they should have to. And considering I made a special request for Dr Grundy to put them in the library, and he said he would, I think he really should have.

Well if he said he was going to do it, he should have done it. I can't argue with that.

Can you not just ring up someone in your class to see the notes you're missing? Blaming the physics/maths library for being shut on weekends is a bit weak as that shouldn't have been a surprise and it would only take five minutes on friday afternoon to check out any books you needed.

If your lecturer said he'd put notes in the library it must be quite frustrating finding out he hasn't but I'm still at a loss understanding this whole 'lecture notes in the library' thing. I've not taken a single maths/physics module in the last 3 years where the lecturer has put notes in the library... that's why you have to go to lectures no?

Um, couldn't you go to the lectures? Or go to the maths library during the week (i thought all 1st years were told that the main library only stores the older maths books)? I mean, when I did those courses there wasn't even the suggestion of posting notes up anywhere and there's no notes posted for most of my hons modules either. Just make sure you don't get stuck like that again (easier said than done, i know).

I know what it feels like to be days from an exam and find your notes make no sense or are full of horizontal lines (I used to fall asleep at the end of sentences in 1st year - 9 o'clocks, eh?)

If you're really stuck on something email me - if I can't help then my gf probably can. It's worth a try.

Fine fine, it's probably all my fault! I'm perfectly willing to admit that. But now I'm actually trying to sort it out, I feel like no-one is really letting me.

Erm, I don't really know anyone in my maths class, or I would ask to copy their lecture notes right away.

While that's true, this university is one of the only one's I know where the library isn't 24 hour access. Considering it's exam time, you'd think they'd make it possible to access any book at any time. But no.

If its just a few pages of notes that you need i could scan them and send it to you (possibly would be too big a file for the st andrews email accounts though). Email me through the sinner if you want.

the maths/physics library has copies of all the tutorial sheets with all the answers. i just went along friday afternoon and photocopied them for around £5 with using the quite swish new auto-feed thingy. i did exactly the same for MT1002 last semester, and i think i got around 75% in the exams having been to 4 or 5 lectures.

even if the copies are booked out they still have a reference-only version you can use for photocopying. failing that i could give you the ones i've got to photocopy on sunday if the situations that bad.

and hey, its not like any of the 2000 modules have mt1003 as a prerequisite :)

I just wish the library was open, cause I feel like getting anything on Monday is leaving it rather late.

This only covers one section of MT1003, and it's from a previous year but it might help a little.

as people say, ultimately you've had all semester to go to lectures and get stuff from the library. :P

one thing i would suggest is that in future if you miss a lecture you go straight away to the lecturer and explain that you missed it and ask if you could borrow the notes to photocopy - shows you're interested. If you go at the end of the year they'll just say no.

And there is no reason why lecture notes should be made available at the end of the year (given the above point for gaining access to the ODD lecture you miss)...
Lectures are there to be attended.

As you say you've now got yourself into this situation... the best thing to do now is find others doing the class and try to borrow them.

Whoever you are Dee you are a god because those are some notes im missing!!

Also, I think notes should be posted on the web as
1) If you miss a whole week due to illness thats incredibly difficult to copy up, and
2) Its a bit of a weak argument, but every other subject i know puts all their material online- surely it should be an all or not at all situation?

Quite a few of the honours modules do in maths. I don't really see what the problem with doing that is as the lecturers generally have a copy of the notes for lectures anyway and they could just have them photocopied and put in the library.

MT1003 = balls

Postby Slash wannabe on Sat May 22, 2004 8:29 pm

MT1003 has been fucking shite, worst module i've done. Heres why:

1) The course isn't over one text book its like three or something stupid like that

2) The notes are crap, im not talking about my notes im talking about the notes and the exam we are being made to sit not tying in with each other. I've had to google some stuff because it just isn't in the notes.

3) One of the lecturers was so crap it was unreal

4) As mentioned before theres like fuck all online which is useless to me. One of the lecturers taking a 1/4 of the course put up some slides (that we never really took notes one) and the tutorial questions and solutions. The other guys well I don't even think they know what the Internet is.

5) Solutions are in the Library? I have to go all the way to the fucking library to work when as far as i know there is only one copy of them which someone could already be using.

Thanks tons for that link Dee you are indeed a GOD! :D

If the course was so poor you should have really spoken to your class rep or course coordinator rather than waiting until a few days before the exam to start bitching.

wow bryn i didnt actually realise that you did mt1003 coz i never ever actually saw you at a lecture

em well...uh...i went to most lectures which might have helped.

as for the unavailability of the math department, it would indeed be nice if i had an advisor in the maths department (wile doing only maths) and maybe even an advisor who was actually fricking here.

here's my word of advice for people...go to your fricking lectures

Fuck off!!! I know i guy who went to every lecture and he thinks the course is crap too. Just because someone might have missed lectures does not mean that they are failing because they missed some. There are other factors you are clearly not considering.
