if they look like they're underage then yes. i know 23 year olds who get ID'd

i think that fresher passes have little orange stickers on them so that the union know that they can't sell to you in pre-sesh

Please do not attempt to buy or consume alcohol if you are underage.
I don't want to sound like a real nag, but quite frankly it is illegal and a disciplinary offense (meaning you risk losing your membership to the Students' Association and can be banned from the building [forever!] for doing it). If you try it in other pubs, they may also impose a licensee ban, again meaning it is a criminal offense to ever enter the premises again. Harsh.....but completely true. Most larger licensed premises will check ID before you even enter the building, nevermind get near the bar.

And if I have lots of disciplinary hearings in the start of term, I will not be happy.

However, please keep in mind that underage students are always welcome to come into the Students' Association and enjoy themselves; they just can't drink alcohol.

After reading the legal/ university advice from the DOS, dont be too scared.

Think about where you come from and what normally happens. There is not alot different. Also I dont know whether your a scot or not but the majority of Scottish Students are underage and they all somehow mysteriously manage to get drunk in freshers week. So dont worry.

In some of the more local pubs they won't id you unless you look particularly underage.

The ones where you will get id'd you can tell by the guys outside asking for id :-/ Although even then, if you look confident enough or you go in early enough, you can get into the pub and probably not be id'd all night :-)

I wouldn't recommend trying it in the union though, if it's quiet enough then they send someone around to watch you buy your drink after checking your matric card.

And if you can't be bothered with all that, then just find out where all the parties are, get older friends to buy your alcohol from tesco and go get drunk at someone's house ;-)

You can actually remove the sticker from the freshers pass. Just peel up the shiny layer on the top of the card and take the little spot off then put it back down again - for at least the first week you'll be ok in the union :)

Hehe, in my first year, the fresher's matric card just asked you to write your own date of birth - i found that quite funny really, especially while getting drunk in the union ;-)

Ok, it really depends on what mood the bouncers are in..like i came to andys when i was 17 and was 18 in november, and i wasn't id'd once...but i seem to get id'd now which is just weord..so you'll have to just take your chances man..

Aye, the perosn that said get a yellow card in freshers week..go for it..cos they don't give you one without id..which means then you're basially screwered..

In the union, just be careful if your gonna take a chance and drink (of course your gonna!! ; ) )...my freind got caught and she was banned fro like 6 months which bloody sucked man...

Have fun!!

Me and one of my friends got caught drinking in the union in first year when we were 17 but all we got was a warning that we would be banned if we did it again. So i tended to go to other pubs to drink first and then head to the union later until i was 18 :-)

My academic son was banned from the union for six months for buying drinks when he was underage.

The ban actually is six months; it doesn't expire when you turn 18.
