Classic Knock Back from the Offy

Postby Smith on Mon Oct 17, 2005 2:56 pm

Went into Bottoms Up this afternoon, to buy some booze, got to the counter, and this woman say's "How old are you?"
I'm like, "20, why?"
She goes, have you got any ID?

I pull out my provisional driving liscense, and she says, "Sorry, we don't accept provisionals."

I say, "why?"
"They are too easy to fake"
(I was pissing myself laughing by this stage.)
I said to her, "And of course those citizen cards are so legitimate."

She refused to serve me, stating that Matriculation cards are also not accepted, even though the dates on the cards clearly matched, and that I was going to buy the stuff with my credit card.

So I went next door and bought the booze in Tesco instead. Anyone else had a similar amusing story? And anyone else heard of a faked provisional?

I'm sure someone will spring to the defence of Bottoms Up staff (I even think someone on this board is one if I rememebr last time this came up) and mention £1000 fines and prison sentences.

Fact is, if you were an undercover person going in to buy alcohol, you wouldn't try and show any I.D. I actually worked on the scheme for a short time myself in my home city, and they use kids (12-13 yr olds) who actually look that old, and they send them in to buy cigs. They aren't given any fake I.D ever to show. If it's alcohol, they send in at most, a 16 yr old, but a yound looking one to buy the alcohol, and again they don't give them any I.D to show.

So, Bottoms Up staff just seem to take a perverse pleasure in knocking back students with I.D for the shittest of reasons. If I was the manager of Bottoms Up, I'd be rather pissed off about this, as it must be costing them in lost sales/custom/giving them a bad name. And seeing as they're competing with Tesco next door, they don't stand much of a chance of winning anyway.

And, who the fuck would fake a provisional? Surely, if you're going to make the effort to fake a provisional you'd just fake a full licence - which is IDENTICAL except for colouring.

Moral of the story - Bottoms Up must have some cunts working there as staff.

I've never understood why a provisional is not accepted, you need to prove your identity in just the same way to get one as you do for a full licence. Or you certainly do now they're plastic - maybe when they were paper in days of yore it was simpler, in which case a lot of people need to update their rules.

I just found it more amusing than annoying, especially since I've been buying alcohol there for two years now, and probably all my future transactions will be done via Tesco, so it's not like I'm losing out

There's always Luvians!

Support your local friendly Bottle Shop!
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

Absolutely - why go to Bottoms Up when you can go to the infinitely superior (and, I think, cheaper) Luvians?

How is it easier to fake an provisional than a full driving licence? they are the same thing, just different colours. Apart from my passport, which i amnt stupid enough to carry around with me, its the only form of ID i carry.

And its clearly better for drivers to be buying alcohol too, rather than people who don't drive yet like me.

If only you hadn't bought that 4 litres of White Lightning, chief, you wouldn't have ended up in Her Majesty's Hotel in Edinburgh this evening. Hope the court appearance in the morning is amusing - just remember: "My cousin is a QC!"

In the end I guess its down to the cashier's own instinct, and if they're being a dick about it as you say the manager will realise through sales figures eventually and they'll be history...

I'm just recalling the times when I was accepted at my local bar with a PHOTOCOPY of a provisional license (doctored to make me 2 years older than I was)...and they accepted it for 4 months!!!

Only trouble I had in St. Andrews was on my 20th birthday when the Vic barstaff asked for some ID when I went up to get my first celebratory drink (and they weren't messing me around, they were serious!?!)

Simple solution: pass your test!

Sorry... That's as annoying as the staff.

Fair enough arguing this one, but sometimes it just makes you look dumb. I was in Tesco last night on my way back home and this girl was laying into this employee because he couldn't authorize her since she had no ID. As he tried to explain to her, it wasn't that he wouldn't, it's that he'd get fired if he did.

She stormed out.

This worked for me with a scan and printout of my passport to add an extra year to myself. The clever bit was, whenever anyone queried it i'd say "you don't think I'm stupid enough to carry the real thing out and about with me do you?" Worked every time.

I've been served by people who don't look 18 before, and i've been EVER so tempted to query them, ask them for ID and say I don't want them serving me as they dont look old enough

Yeah forgot to mention my excuse for carrying a photocopy was that the real thing was in the post waiting to be replaced by a full license...does that sound like a Del Boy trick or what?

I used to use my actual provisional license which proved I was 17.
Got refused once, I shit you not.

the undercover people they send in are not allowed to lie. therefore staff can cover their ass by asking for the person's age. the undercover person cant lie so there will be no prosecution. no ID is necessary. they may end up selling to a few underage people but they aren't going to get prosecuted. as for not accepting provisionals, the only answer I can think of is the staff member is incompetant. anyways, tesco is generally cheaper.

Being from Fife anyway, I can say that there is a lot of faking of provisional liscenes going on in the Kingdom, and apparently they are easier to fake. This isn't just a St Andrews phenomenon, most places in Fife will refuse a provisional liscence, certainly in Kirkcaldy/Glenrothes/Dunfermline and closer, in Cupar and so forth. Anyway, serves you right for not going to Luvian's!
