For those who self-cater, how much do you spend on food in a week?

Currently spending about £7 a week, in terms of food bought in a supermarket, plus maybe a little more if I choose to get a quick sandwich somewhere in town.

No, really.

I'm on a fairly impressive budget, though, and al my main meal costs are split between five people. A lot cheaper that way.

I spend about £10 a week in tesco, a bit more if i go to kfb one night. But then i work in halls so i'm fed there which means four less meals to make

We probably spend at least £60 a week (for two of us). None of that is eating out either.

At the moment I'm spending around £12 a week on food, and I'm not eating out and I'm cooking everything from scratch.

Last year when I budget got really bad, I magically managed to live on £4 a week. Not even sure now how I did it but I'm soo glad I'm not in that situation again.

it's amazing how much money avoiding pre-made food saves. I spend something similar, more some weeks when I buy a nice bit of cheese or need to restock the coffee grounds which I am prepared to splash out on.I try and avoid Tesco as that just drains money away.

Probably in the £20-25 bracket, but I never buy pre-made stuff, and I love cooking, so you can really eat well on that amount of money.

Indeed, you can easily feed six to eight people a four course dinner for that, which is nice.

I am amazed at how you can live on such a meagre budget. I will spend in the region of £125 per week at least (before dining out in town-which i will do 3 or 4 times a week) and maybe another £60 on top of that when i drive through to M&S in Edinburgh. I love good quality food so i don't have any problem with spending this amount of money.

You have got to be a wind up. I love good quality food as well, and I love to eat out and know what I'm talking about in food and wine. For ONE person, eating at home, £125 is ludicrous. You're not buying things for their quality, you're buying them because they're expensive.

I'm glad i have found someone of like mind. I assure you i am not joking. For example when in stock i take my fair share of the (argentine) organic fillet steaks from our Tesco. They are reasonably priced, but if you get 10 of those per week it begins to add up. I also love Smoked Salmon, which i get through at a rate of knots!

fancy steak and expensive salmon (while very very nice to eat) cannot amount that that ridiculous cost in 1 week.
not unless you have 4 fat steaks and 2 fillets of smoked salmon for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a bottle of wine from 1902 (or whatever year vintage wine is popular from).

and if you eat out 3-4 times a week, on top of your £125, i really dont know how you can spend that much on food a week.

just to let you know, you can eat perfectly good, very nice food for a low budget as well.
take a trip to the butchers instead of tesco for your meat. im not sure what the one here is like, but most other places butchers have always been better than any supermarket.

Funny you should say that Rufus because i have had a browse round the new Waitrose in Edinburgh today. You would love it. I bought a few bits and bobs! Really looking forward to lunch tomorrow.

And yes, You are correct. Ordinarily i wouldn't shop in Tesco (at least not whilst at home), but you know the saying...."When in Rome......"

Whatever way you look at it Exnihilo, i will still be spending the amounts i have mentioned whether in Dundee (M&S) or in Edinburgh.

10 steaks a week maybe an "awful lot" for you, but i happen to like it alot.
