21st birthday presents

Postby Bizarre Atheist on Wed Jul 04, 2007 7:53 pm

Ev'nin all

I'm trying to financially plan around the unpredictable nature of my upcoming 21st birthday presents (which precede Xmas by a mere 4days). So, to aid my research, what did you horrible lot get from your parents/grandparents etc for your 21sts?

You are, of course, free to comment on how I'm ruining the surprise/being ungrateful/am making baby Jesus cry if you please, but do also mention what you got for your 21st.

A digital camera (slr?) and a full kilt get up did it for me. Result and a half.

I don't really remember. I was extremely jetlagged at the time. Not much though, because my parents had just paid for (or rather, were going to be paying for) my three week trip through germany and italy.

I went to Boston and saw my first Red Sox game.

We lost 13-3 (for non baseball fans, that is as bad as it sounds).

An iPod video - and they came up to visit and took my closest friends and I out for a birthday meal.

Our parents love us.

Or, more likely, only people who got cool stuff bothered to post. Although mine wasn't as extravagant as it sounds; my parents just paid the credit card bill for my rail pass and hostels while I went gadding about.

Although they did throw a really nice barbecue party when I got back, for my actual birthday. But that was more for them than it was for me...they invited all their friends and did the whole "we're finally done!" thing. IIRC, I eventually ditched it, with the rest of the "kids" and went bowling.

My 21st birthday present will, more than likely, be a kick up the arse and getting told to make my own way in the world

Is the whole 21st birthday a big deal all over the UK/World? In Wales it was our 18ths that were big birthdays while we were still at school - none of our large group of friends did anything particular for our 21st.

My Mum reckoned celebrating your 21st was quite an old fashioned thing to do now, and that the 18th is a more modern celebration. However, I think they realised that elsewhere the 21st was still quite a big deal so my parents got me a nice white gold celtic ring which wasn't extortionate in monetary value but means plenty to me.

We had big celebrations for 18, too, though.
