Question?

Postby careba2010 on Thu Aug 14, 2008 5:12 pm

I was taken ill during an exam last semester and was assured on the day by the exams office that I would be allowed to sit it as a deffered exam in the September.

Now the University (Specifically the school of Econ) have decided I am not eligible to sit the exam as a deffered and must pay £100 and do it as the resit which discounts my coursework. Does anyone know if this is common Uni policy? As far as I can tell if I was taken ill before the exam I would be allowed to sit it as a deffered, and I am being punished for being ill.

Using what medium did the exams office tell you you would be eligible to defer?

Also - did they state explicitly that the deferred exam would take place during the resit exams?

Verbally and it was reiterated by SSS and the Exams Office said they would contact me in July which they didnt. They said it would take place in the resit diet

If it's not on paper, then it's a case of your word against their own.

It might be worth raising this point with SSS; however, other than that, I guess you'll end up paying.

So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

I'd kick up a huge fuss. Don't lose your temper or anything, but be insistent. Talk to SSS. Write letters to the school, admin, etc etc. Call them. Go in person.

You can also ask for support from the Students' Association, specifically the Director of Representation, James Shield. dorep@st-and.ac.uk

You certainly can. If you're in town then feel free to stop by my office on the middle floor of the Union, or you can always call me on 01334 462700. Also, Iain Cupples (our Education Advocate) will be in from Monday.

If you were ill or have a disability, you could argue that you are being discriminated against because of it- being treated as someone who failed when this is not the case. check back through your emails- have you had one at any point outlining the stuff that was verbally agreed? I would refuse to pay, and threaten going to the press instead.

That is complete bull. This last exam period, I felt really ill during an exam, thought it was just nerves but a half hour before the exam finished i ran into the bathroom and threw up. At this point a woman came with me and like you, assured me it would be ok and i would most likely be able to sit it again as a deffered exam. I told my department (physics) and they told me they would have to have a look at the paper i wrote before a decision could me made.

End of story is i got to sit the deferred exam and the exam that was the next day as i still didn't feel well enough.

If the physics department can do it i don't see why the economics department can't. I was really worried about mine too because i had actually reached the half hour at the end when no one could leave, ie, had a lot of time to do the exam before i was ill.

I would fight your case hard and say you know for a fact other departments have done better and think it's totally unreasonable.

Out of curiosity, are you sub-honours or honours? Cause that could make a difference.

You shouldn't have to kick up any fuss. Email askmaggie@st-and.ac.uk and I'm certain she can help, or at least guide you to the person who can.

I am sub honours Fuzzy Beans, but you would think the University would have a common policy. I was taken ill in the first 45minutes of the exam

I didn't realise you were ill during the exam. For me, I would see it as unfair to allow you to defer the exam for the simple reason that it opens up a very easy door for cheating.

I could walk into an exam, realise I didn't know enough of the answers to get the grade I wanted, then fake illness to get a deferral.

I appreciate that it is likely you didn't do this, but surely you can also appreciate that it is better to close a cheating loophole than to give out deferrals to everyone who wants one.

My advice would be, if you feel even slightly ill in future, make sure you notify the exam board in advance.

Honours resits/deferred exams have a different set up so it could make a difference, if you fail an honours module you can resit it but the most you can ever get for it is a 5, ie, the credits you need, sub-honours is completely different.

Have you had any luck so far?
