I've been to debates a couple of times this year and as i remember, everyone at the front was very smartly dressed? Don't think i saw anyone wearing hoodies except people in the audience and if you started imposing a dress code just to get in, i for one wouldn't bother turning up, which is unfair as everyone has a right to go to the debates.

You missed the Debates Hoodies, I have held back from buying one thus far.

I'm holding back on a permanant basis.

Debates being formal has never put peopl eoff in the past, it's a recent 'theory' that the formality infact turns people away.

It's utterly untrue.

I'd agree with that, and add that an enormous number of people actually rather like formality, welcome a chance to dress up a little, wear their gowns even. But what would I know, I only have the long view of things.

Indeed, I always found boring and overly long debates put people off, the formality does not detract from length, and when done properly the standing orders take minimal time and occasionally add to the humour.

I want to get some new Black Tie attire. Nothing too expensive (~£250), and it can be off the peg. Any recommendations?

I am amazed you only wish to spend two weeks worth of your Tesco budget on Black Tie Attire!

I am amazed at how you can live on such a meagre budget. I will spend in the region of £125 per week at least (before dining out in town-which i will do 3 or 4 times a week) and maybe another £60 on top of that when i drive through to M&S in Edinburgh. I love good quality food so i don't have any problem with spending this amount of money.

Relax Dick and cease your amazement. Unless of course you have anything remotely constructive to add.

For £250 you can do quite well. TKMax should have some £500 reduced to £200 DJ's.
Slaters or M&S will give you off the peg. Slaters DJ's start at £80-£90 upto what ever you wish to spend but remember they will do free alterations.

Amazed that anyone dares to recommend T K Maxx after the sniffy response elicited last time advice was sought:

…don't get taken with a certain label or anything else. It's better to have a properly fitting M&S suit than a Hugo Boss suit that doesn't look right…

…don't be lured by a flashy label, go for a quality fabric and a cut that looks good on you, I'm heartily sick of people in bag-like designer label suits for which they paid hundreds…

Did you ever get your general purpose lounge suit, Rob? And which shop’s offering happened to fit you? Point is, M & S’s trousers may not accommodate an athlete’s thighs, whereas sheer luck may dictate that the despised ‘flashy‘ label from T K Maxx have its jacket cut as though tailored to the wearer (who then went off to Sandhurst in it). You can but trail around and try on – and pay cash in T K Maxx!!

I think the point was that any suit that fits properly, and looks good on you is better than any that doesn't look any good, but has that all-"important" flashy label.

The suit that served me for the past few years, until I decided on a new one this summer, was a Topman one that fitted perfectly on me. It did for what I needed, and it looked good. I dare say I would have been happy with a Hugo Boss one of the same cut and fit too, but my bank manager not so.

Presumably because they all got their bank accounts cleaned out the last time they shopped there. Didn't you?

First ever purchase by self in said store - 31st March 05. Last date stated involving compromised data - 28th June 04. Equanimity in financial affairs - as in others - related to attention to detail.

Can anyone suggest a company from whom one can buy polka-dot silk scarves (for men) over the internet? Awkward time of year I know.

Now that the weather is all a-flux, being cool in the morning and evenings and much warmer in the middle of the day, is it okay to wear socks with sandals?

Sandals are all about convenience but sometimes in the mornings/evenings its slightly too cool for them so perhaps socks would come into use.

I know that generally this is rather taboo but surely when the seasons are changing we can make an exception.

PS- is it just me or do the BoT wear black tie far too infrequently?

I think it's known as the Skegness effect. Personally, I'd say no, but then again, most of my experience of seeing people wearing socks with sandals surrounds fifty-somethings, belly out and a knotted hankie at the ready.

I do love it how the BoT now refers to "dressing up" from time to time, when there are particularly distinguished speakers - like it's something special that should only be done occasionally.

In fact Mr Cahn once challenged me "Have you ever been to a debate not in black tie?" - the fact the question even need be posed should speak for itself.

Only if they are white, towelling socks. And only then if you are prepared to lead people in singing Kumbaya.

I would rather see someone wearing sandals with socks than see someone wearing sandals without socks, and their horrible grotty hairy toes with untrimmed grey nails on them sticking out.

Basically just wear proper shoes all the time, please.

While remaining with the theme of shoes, moving on slightly... what are people's views on oxblood shoes. I have a pair of oxblood brogues which I've just dug out of the back of my wardrobe, and, while they need a good clean and polish, I really can't decide if they're extremely smart or a bit horrid.
