rocksoc bop

might be worth your while seeing if you can team up with deviant noise sometime after the fashion show and get a rocksoc/deviant joint bop going,

The disco things we have? You know with the drinking and music and dancing?

What do you mean by a rocksoc bop exactly? We don't get enough people to fill venue 1 and if we were to have it in venue 2, well...what would be the difference compared to a normal rocksoc?

I've been lamenting this idea to Ben Spiers and the rest of the hacks for ages,

get socs involved in running a bop every now and then. if you took over a saurday bop night, instead of a "pop bop" it could be a RockBop - co hosted by RockSoc and Deviant Noise - your DJ's - Your Music - Just Venue 1 instead of Venue2 - get more people through from main bar, meaning more people have a chance to sign up for the respective socs.

all im asking is that the commitee, consider it,

i'm doing some publicity work with Ents in the bops for the next half of the term, and this will involve advertising bops (through various medium on bop night).

and i will be advertising heavily every bop night, i can also use the projector to feed live images through (in theory)

'k but you know how the yah's will whinge...Yay!

The Union would lose money on giving rocksoc a weekend bop slot. Did you see how empty it was with the indie night?

I'm all for it btw, I just think its probably beent tried and failed (or even fried and tailed!).

I think its a great idea Mohawk. It could totally be done although it could possibly be more successful if all the rock societies ie rocksoc, livesoc, deviant noise, altsoc etc all joined forces to put on a good show.

Surely most soc'ers of the alternative music societies arent pop bopping people and possibly like me are annoyed that the main event in the union at the weekend is a pop event something im completely not interested in.

It also might get rid of this stupid vs thing thats going on between music societies.

Venue 1 sucks though. it's a really terrible venue. the ceiling is too high & the little atmosphere present is left clinging to the walls trying to escape through the gaps in the plaster. the best i've seen Venue 1 in my nearly 2 years here is this year's RockSoc Hallowe'en. & that must've taken a lot of work to achieve.

please don't put a RockSoc or whatever in that venue.

purely a personal point of view & i would be interested as to know what other members would make of a Rock bop in venue 1.

you could of course just have a slightly more Rock oriented version of a normal bop instead. that way you needn't involve the other societies too much. said societies could merely help out by pointing out to its members that there would be a bit more Rock than usual tonight in the hope that a few members would turn up together.

that way non-music society types would still turn up & enjoy it in theory & it might also encourage a few more members of RockSoc & stuff to turn up.

of course it would have to be done quite delicately. maybe simply chuck in a bit more bands like Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Feeder, Nirvana etc.. than would normally be in there. too much Rock of the wrong type at the wrong time & regular bop goers may just fuck off. which might not be so good as it may initially seem.

if i knew that a slightly higher proportion of Rock classics would be present in a friday bop i might be tempted to go along, although maybe provided there was going to be a few other RockSoc types in there as well.

Benedict and I agree for once!

Thanks for explaining properly why venue 1 sucks, I wasn't adequately able to do it myself :-)

if rocksoc and other alternative societies are unwilling to do it then fair enough, i'm personally going to try and get one ran by the union up and into the fray, see what happens to crowd numbers..

If you could get a successful alternative/Rock-based Bop organized through the Union, that would be great...however, I seriously doubt there's much chance of it happening. Over the 4 years I've been here, numerous such things have been attempted, and WITHOUT EXCEPTION, they've failed. Rocksoc Hallowe'en discos in the past have fallen horribly flat (even when they've been massively publicised), while the pathetic crowds who routinely fail to pack Venue 1 for any live music event, however popular the band are (interesting factoid: three years ago, the Union booked the So Solid Crew, then comfortably in the Top Ten singles chart, to play in Venue One during Freshers' Week. No-one turned up. Curious as to why, the organizers wandered upstairs, to discover that Rocksoc's Freshers' Disco, in Venue 2, had more people attending. By a clear margin. Go figure) suggest strongly that, frankly, St Andrews students aren't interested in such things in large enough numbers to make it a viable proposition for the Union (who, however much they may deny it, still act under the FALSE assumption that their primary responsibility is to make as much money as they can from Union-based events).
Basically, it's been tried too many times, in one form or another, for me to hold out much hope of it succeeding. Plus, err...what Benedict said. Good luck, but I suspect you'll need it.

thank you Mark,

if i can get this sorted d'ya think that some of your DJ's would be willing to strut their stuff?

tonight was a chart bop, and it was me, and a dj running it (me on lights)

we had 20 - 30 people dancing at the most.. rocksoc probably was heaving - it certainly was when i popped up to get my gear and t shirt from upstairs.

I'm all tingly...

Postby Bede on Fri Mar 19, 2004 3:45 am

Hooray! I'm a registered sinner accountman now! Thought I better had what with deviant noise getting a message board and all...

Anyway, me thinks idea good. Sick of union assessing every event as to what will make most money. DN/Rocksoc could put on an extreemly good bop-type event IF GIVEN THE PROPER SUPPORT. I very much doubt as many people would come as attend a usual bop, but with carefully selected DJ's and if "our union" would actually help us to "do stuff" a really good night could be put together and attract the crowds who really don't want to come to the Thurs/Fri/Sat "three day orgy of cheese."

Rant over. Idea good. Will the union help?

well the ents team would more than likely be up for it, we want to see the bop brimming to capacity, you could contact the ents officer on ents@st-andrews.ac.uk in the first instance to get chatting

If you want to see the union brimming to capacity, a Rocksoc/Deviant Noise bop is not what you want. A cheese bop is. However, the OCCASIONAL rocky type thing in venue one works, because they're special. Like Rocksoc Halloween or the Fashion Show. I wouldn't want them all the time because the novelty would wear off and frankly, venue 2 has more atmosphere.

well dangermouse, would you prefer to see more rock played in the bop in general? not your darkness crap, proper rock, like maiden, metallica etc?

you might be able to get Bring Your Daughter into it, given the justification of it's chart position back when. In actual fact that might work in a School Daze one, err hmm.

the very occaisional Metallica or Maiden song in a bop could conceivably work but in general it would probably be a bit out of place i think. well friday (or perhaps saturday) bop anyway.

I can't imagine any of our DJs would object to playing at the Bop if they were asked (I certainly wouldn't). So there you go.
