I like Wetherspoons for the cheap drink - but no music is nice, especially as you don't have to shout over the music as bars always play it at crap volumes anyways - either too loud or too quiet.

No smoking in bars would be nice.

I actually agree that sometimes no music is good, but I was just referring to the fact that if they've banned music, and want to ban smoking and swearing too, then it's only a matter of time before they ban drunkenness... alcohol... fun of any kind...

And yeah, the prices rock. I wish there was one in St A.

I have to wonder why for no reason they had to turn the music up to Friday/Saturday night levels tonight (Sunday) in the Union.

But surely, if this is all going to come down to the rights of individuals, then it must be the old needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

It's not as simple as that in this case though. Because do we protect the rights of the individual patron of the bar, or the individual rights of the bar owner? Yes, there are more customers there, but they could easily go elsewhere, and they have no right to dictate anything else that goes on in that bar, e.g. drink prices, decor, etc etc.

I don't know why this bothers me so much actually. I think it's just because the government IS trying to stop people from smoking, eating unhealthily, and getting drunk, but not through recommendations but by bringing in legislation which will prevent us from doing it. I want the choice.

the music was at said level ten, because the bar staff are still familiarising themselves with the setup of the mixer, e gain was turned up pretty full, i went and sorted it when i started the quiz though,

if i punch someone in the face i wouldn't expect them to be calm about it & think well i'll just stay away from there in future. i'd also expect them to expect the law to protect them from it in future.

alcohol is far different to smoking as alcohol only directly affects the individual drinking it. smoking directly affects all those around them. it shouldn't be a case that you should have to stay away to stop yourself being harmed. just as it shouldn't be the case that you should have to stay away from an establishment to stop someone punching you in the face.

You know what, I agree with the 'ends' they're trying to achieve, I just don't agree with the 'means'. If they were to ban smoking in public places, it really wouldn't affect me at all, cos as i say, I'm not a smoker, but it just seems offensive to me for them to do that.

(I have a 5000 word essay due tomorrow, hence my activity on this thread. Only 4979 words to go!)

I think karaoke should be banned from the union. I don't choose to partake in it, but it affects me. It often makes my ears bleed, or alternatively, feel pressured to leave. I think it is very rude and inconsiderate of these people therefore. Maybe they should have a small, self-contained, even sound-proofed room especially for people who choose to karaoke, so that it does not affect the majority who do not karaoke.

I agree, I think that a far more reasonable thing to do would be put karaoke in Venue 2 and allow average drunken Union patrons to avoid the hassle of inept singers.

We should also stop loud people from being allowed in. They're annoying. Although... really the only moment in recent history I can think of when loud people were annoying was Boozeday Tuesday in the Lizard.

I realise that you're being facetious, but this is still an extremely stupid comparison.

There is a big difference between something irritating you and being unpleasant to listen to, and something actually poisoning you. Karaoke might not be fun, but I guarantee that no matter how much you listen to, you won't die.

As far as I'm concerned, complaints like "it makes my hair smell" are on par with the unpleasantness of listening to karaoke. It's unpleasant, but not actually dangerous. Inhaling smoke is physically bad for you...that's the difference.

Also, karaoke is on one night a week, whereas the Union is full of smoke every night of the week.
