Rumours on Traditions...

Postby Lindsay on Thu May 06, 2004 5:35 pm

Someone mentioned in a tutorial today about traditions that apparently exist about exams.

One says that you are entitled to a pint of ale with your exam providing you are carrying a sword.

The other was something to do with gaining a first if you wear plate armour to your exam.

Does anyone know the truth about these rumours, as someone who owns both a sword and a full suit of plate armour, I'd be interested to find out! ;-)

Not content with just a first? That's just greedy.

The first one is just an urban legend - a joke that gets told as 'my friend...' and then becomes 'someone once...'. I've heard it said about St Andrews, Cambridge, Oxford and Durham, so I doubt very much if it has any basis in fact. I've never heard the second, but I don't imagine it's any more real.

If your roommate dies, you automatically get a first. So I believe.

I heard this one as 'if they commit suicide...'. Oddly, after I'd mentioned it, quite a few people wanted to move in with me. Can't imagine why.

In SQA exams, if you happen to die whilst sitting a paper, you are automatically awarded an 'A' for the whole subject.

A friend of mine (admittedly, he was rather impractical, but nevertheless) had his exams really well spaced out, one every 5 days, and was desperately keen to get hold of the poison that featured in Romeo and Juliet, which gives the person taking it all the impressions of being dead, but lasts only three days.

He thought that this way he could technically die in each exam, get a nice rest in between exams, have 2 days to get over any after-efects, and then repeat the process again!

Needless to say, it never happened...

I heard a story that someone couldnt take failing an exam so much so that during it they took two pencils put the sharp ends one in each nostril and slammed their head into the table. Dunno if they got any A's but its a fucking creative way to go to say the least.

My Chemistry teacher said that happened during an exam in a school she worked in.

one of my friends did that with a knitting needle while she was bouncing on the bed singing and using the needle as a microphone. luckily she didn't do a huge amount of harm. made us laugh though.

Does that apply to flatmates as well as roommates? Because if so, that would solve two problems for me ;)

Sorry to rain on the proverbials, but check out the above link and do a rudimentary search, and you'll find out that Marco is quite right...

Lies and halftruths! Also, if someone has to die (and there's always one) make sure you eat their brain in order to absorb their knowledge.

roommate's suicide = good grades?

Postby Sarahbails on Fri May 07, 2004 9:11 am

hmmm.

My first year of college one of my roommates was suicidal and I had to drive her to the hospital after she slit one of her wrists. I did not receive any special treatment, except getting a test moved back two days after a slight emotional breakdown. The next year a guy I knew from high school who went to the same college as me had his roommate commit suicide. He jumped out of an attic window in his dorm. When the police woke the roommate up the next morning he did not believe them and ran to the window and saw his roommate (and best friends) body. I do not believe he received any special grades either. IF either of us had, it would not have made much of a difference after having gone through that experience!

I know in high school if someone killed themselves in an exam then EVERYBODY in the hall got an A...

I know of someone in this University who went into the sea to save his friend's life the night of one of his exams; but the University didn't allow him to take his exam at a later date, and there was no compassionate marking given.
Oh, and the friend now hates him.

I've gotta ask; how does yone ram a knitting needle up one's nose and into the brain without causing a lot of damage?

sorry, i didn't word it very well - i meant that she shoved it up her nostril but it smashed her nose and her eye socket. so it did a fair amount of damage, but not death or brain damage.
