Uploaded imovies - a question

Postby [WSD]-Deus on Mon May 24, 2004 6:55 pm

If the imovie (campusfest) rules stipulate that any film over 1 second longer than 5 minutes is automatically disqualified, then how come certain movies were allowed to exceed this limit?

While we are asking i-movie themed questions:

Which film was judged the best by the official panel?

Was there a top 3?

Help would be much appreciated!

The top three on the night were

1. Shadow of the Hamster
2. Bully For You
3. ...(I can't actually remember. Sorry, people at #3... anyone else?)

I don't know if any of the films are over 5mins, Deus, as many files have 'overrun'. This is to say, when recording the movie from DV to the computer they left the DV playing for too long so the file contains the footage after the film ends (normally this is amusing stock footage :D ).

The list of films that exceed the 5 minute limit (the rules state that the credits must be within this limit):

1. team 2 Shadow of the Hamster (credits begin 4:59, complete end 5:10)
2. team 17 (film begins roughly 0:03 or 0:04, end of credits 5:11)
3. team 18 4 years in 5 minutes (lasts 5:49)
4. team 30 Lobsters 2 The Crustacean Mutation (credits begin 5:03/5:04, credits end 5:16)
5. team 31 Rabbits (movie ends 4:58 / 4:59, credits end 5:50 or 5:57)
6. team 41 28 Beers Later (lasts 5:11)

Although some movies appear at first glance to run longer than the 5 minute limit (for roughly one or two seconds, such as team 20's Love Factually), they actually do not. This has happened for various reasons, such as poor encoding and/or dv cut-off points.

Although some may be one second or two over the limit (the reasons for the above do not seem applicable, such as team 74's The Boots Perfect, or team 67's Destroy Roy), I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Oh stop it already! Yes, I've worked on two iMovies in the past two years, both of which faded into credits at 5:00 or 5:01.

Look. I'm not saying that the rule is there to be broken, but simply that it has to exist. An event as organised and 'equal' (bring on the debate) as iMovie/Campusmovie wouldn't be able to operate without setting a very strict time limit. And five minutes works very well with the general level of the films that are handed in by the 70+ teams. Those who decide to risk going over it to, say, 5:11 and hand in can do so IMHO. The judging is based on watching each iMovie until 5:00.
I don't think there has been a case for this yet, but if a movie is handed in that clocks in at 5:45, then it will hardly be shortlisted and shown on the night (let alone win any prizes), unless the first five minutes of it deserve whatever ranking on their own. In which case you can be ultra-anal and chop the file at 5:00 for distribution.

Edit: Furthermore, once again with the general level/quality of the films that are handed in, 5 solid minutes is all that most teams are able to manage in a hectic week of filming.

There will always be an exception to strengthen the rule. Enough already!

I agree, while we're at it, why don't we let Steve Redgrave compete in the special olypmics, after all, who cares if there are rules and regulations?

Does it not occur to you that these Imovie rules exist for a reason? The rules make it incredibly clear that Any movie more than ONE second over 5 minutes is to be disqualified. If this rule is not strictly adhered to, we might as well start directing full-length epics, as the rule is just as broken should a film last 1 hour over the limit as it does 10 seconds.

Does it really matter - those of you complaining - sorry your film didn't make it but it was probably shit anyway. Leave the thing alone - its for sad anally retentive pricks like you that these events don't get run again.

Is it free? Yes
Did you have fun doing it? Yes
Did the people organising put in a hideous amount of time? Yes
Did you get a computer and camera to muck about with for a week? Yes

Grow up the lot of you.

let all mortal flesh keep silent is pretty unwatchable with the sound skipping all over the place.

I was not complaining, merely attempting to point out a fact - the fact being that the rules were not adhered to and were not enforced. It is not being 'anally retentive' or pedantic to follow the rules.

I agree with Odysseus' comment that a few seconds over the limit would be exactly the same as an hour. One of the great challenges in film-making is the editing process (i.e. deciding what scenes should stay in the movie, etc.). This 5 minute time constraint is part of the challenge (forcing teams to drop whole scenes, speed others up, etc.). If all of the teams had known that length did not quite matter, then many of the movies would have turned out differently (most likely for the better).

It is a matter of principle.

Having only just seen Shadow of the Hamster, I just have to express my awe for it. St Andrews destroyed in five minutes to the music of Lord of the Rings - what more could I want in life???

Gerrr? In that case you can't agree with me, because I have the opposite opinion. What I meant is that the rule is there, it needs to be there for official purposes, but so what.

As Chaucer kind of restated my position... it's not the Oscars, it was all free, it's a very friendly student film festival, therefore I wouldn't want them anally disqualifying ones that clock in at 5:01. It would ruin the spirit that we have going.

Deus, I see your point. But I personally have no objections to films that run to about 5:06 and then fade into credits. Yes, they probably would've been able to squeeze out an extra few seconds worth. But if the film really is top-notch, I don't care.
And having seen the standard of the 50+ other movies competing... no, I don't think that knowledge of length not mattering would've made any difference to most of them.

They'll have to have a rule there, sounding strict, so that no-one goes well over the limit. In reality they probably don't care if its only a couple of seconds over. I don't know much about it though, so thats all i'll say on the issue.
