I agree, but smaller epsilons are apparently most effective in the battle that rages on every day between Olsen and his foe.

But why an epsilon?? Perhaps ze enemy should go for the shock tactic and catch him unawares with a small delta, gamma or other greek letter...they are all just as evil in my opinion.

Actually, if ze enemy really wanted to defeat Olsen it should sneak into Smith's room and steal the evil slide from his last Differential equations lecture...Thats got to be the kind of maths that could make anyone loose the will to live.

Nah FIPS last lecture was not so much hard, as just really quite boring.
It's just theory at the mo. But p.d.e's > o.d.e's

About the epsilon. The enemy uses epsilons for a reason. I asked Olsen, but he almost became tearful. I didn't want to push the warrior any more than he is pushed EVERY day.

Not hard!

*blinks and stares*

Well I have no intention of even trying to figure out that mess with greek letters he put on the slide and then expected us to be able to copy down in ultra fast time.

Its such a pity its compulsary.

You know, its going to bug me for all eternity because you can probably tell exactly who I am but I'll never figure out which person in the lectures you are.

Haha that first bit made me laugh, because i was actually laughing in that lecture, firstly because of FIP'S poor choice of greek letters. I mean he could have used alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon etc etc but he chose the hardest greek letters to actually write. FOOL. Then we got up to that bit where it was just basically the greek alphabet, and he was done with that slide in about 20 seconds. Remember though, according to frank, we don't need the theory.....Hmmmmm

And no i could not even hazard a guess at who you are. The thing is, in that lecture i literally only know 4 peoples names maximum. The rest i just "know" having seen them over the past few weeks in lectures.

Where abouts do you sit? I take it you are in linear maths too? What about fundamentals of applied, are you in there too?

*cough*

Not hard, not hard at all, photo of me is so easy to find...

And nope I did linear maths (nightmare, only got an 8), complex analysis and the other compulsary one last year....all I'm doing this semester is my project, Differential Equations, Number Theory and Rings and Fields.

Perhaps I should have done the applied maths in second year rather than the evil statistics and then I might stand more chance of understanding D.E.

Scellanis + Dirac.

ah you guys are really sweet... where do you sit etc...

you should go and get a coffee together...or even an ice-cream sundae with two spoons and talk about epsilons and stuff.
Wish i had someone like that in my lectures...maybe i could start doing maths and come join you guys, i'l bring a spoon aswell!
love and kisses

Just to tell everyone, i am going back home over reading week.
Over this week i will be trying to find the SMALLEST ever epsilon, and thus i will be refreshed and ready to take Olsen on in week 8.
I also warn of other strikes, against edmundo, and FIPS.

Olsen teaches courses that are much, much harder than diffs (example: MT5825. Fuck me. Fractals has nothing on that) but Olsen is easily ten times and probably 10*10 times better at teaching than Frank Smith. If Olsen or Falconer or Ruskuc or Priest or Wright or Hood or Bell or... did Diffs and Complex Analysis they'd be much better courses overall. Also: of course we need the fucking theory, prove the general case PLEASE.

Maths people! I am the tall gimp with a ponytail, only I won't after reading week as an interview neccessitates a haircut. Say hello to me, or something, as one of you said you were doing number theory which I am also doing!

A ponytail...ok, you have to be the person I sit behind alot of the time in Number Theory. But don't expect me to say hello...I am the shyest person ever. *sniffles* Nasty interviews, long hair is good...

Dirac...you are such a pest, how am I supposed to hide from you if I don't know which person you are?

The hardest modules in Maths are ones taught by Campbell.

sorry to pick holes in your post, md25, but Bell does teach complex this year, hence the lack of complaints about it on this thread! you are right bout diff though, although frank smith is a nice enough guy he's not in the same league as those other lecturers you mentioned. bless him, though, he tries

Olsen is NOT a god!

Postby the-enemy on Sat Nov 06, 2004 10:06 pm

I believe in his lecture for MT2002 on Friday Olsen rather let his mask slip and proved that he is not out to make the world a better place, only to get his own way! I hear he was mad about many people arsing up a monotone question only because it made him lose a bet with Edmund!

And thats not the worst part! To prove his point about reading questions, he stole a book from his own daughter! STOLE, not borrowed, from his own mouth! oh, the shame, lars, i think i may be victorious yet...

"Numbers are gut, but functions are better!"

come on the guy bring mathematics to the masses, and people actually look forward to goin to his lectures. others should take note, olsen is the man for the people!
