by the masses i mean myself, an average joe and not a maths nerd, i hope this appeals to more than just me in 2002!




if you are in 2002 you are, by definition, a "maths nerd". i can understand people doing stats or mt2001 if they do other courses, but algebra and analysis? thats a course that anyone not studying maths would be really stupid to do.

i think there are two types of people that take maths
1. maths nerds that study and read around the topic/modules
2. people such as myself that do maths

the first group are mathematicians whereas i only take maths. i think there is a difference, well i like to think there is!

who do u see yourself as? group 2 or "the-enemy"????!!!!

It's like that with any subject though.In any case some people do not really need to read around the subject, as they just exhibit an innate capability for mathematics, and so they can apply it to most areas when they have to.

I don't understand why you are so bothered by being termed a "maths nerd".
I'm sure figures through history such as Newton would have been called maths nerds.
However, i would not be upset if someone very indirectly compared me to Newton by calling me a "maths nerd".

well he does try hard. though maybe he'd do better to actually attend the lectures rather bursting in for short spells only to be defeated. may be best to term the enemy as a wannabe maths nerd.

and what implies that I "read around the subject" any more than you do, just cos my sinner account is poking fun at the lecturers? that unregistered user, whoever they are, jumped to the same conclusion about you as you did about me, by branding me a "maths nerd". I hardly think you can start slagging me off when you obviously have such a clear idea as to who i am. If you can point me out in lectures and pick me out as being a "maths nerd" then whatever, but making that assumption because of a bit of banter on a messageboard?!

Personally, I would see myself as group 2: if you were to ask me random maths facts that aren't covered in class I'd struggle to answer any of them.

I'm sure no-one in maths likes to think they are a "maths nerd", but sadly thats the way people in arts and even the other science departments will look at you, because its not a fashionable subject. perhaps less in-fighting and war against the "trendies" in the arts would be better? Lets see how many of them can beat the small epsilon?!

Hmm...I'd call myself a maths nerd but I don't do extra reading, its only because I absolutely love pure maths. I would read more on stuff like rings and fields and combinatorics if I didn't find the library terrifying.

And stop looking at me like that, libraries are bad, I walked into the automatic entrance door of the main library twice on saturday and the exit only door...

Although, today I am actually reading about maths, well calendars, but its for maths.

Just out of interest how many people are planning to come listen to the maths talks the fourth years have to do next week?? I'd like to know so I can start panicking appropiately....

not really, no-one said that being a maths nerd implied you were in that class, but rather the other way round: if you do that class then you are a maths nerd. I do not necessarily believe this is true, but thats waht our distinguished friend who didn't put a name to their post was trying to say.

I would probably be seen as quite nerdy, but i don't really care. I have always read around my subjects, and with maths i enjoy furthering my knowledge of things. Though not necessarily in a mathematical nature, purely for the interest of the mathematicians work we may be looking at in lectures. I think it helps to keep things fresh.

i agree with what "the-enemy" has also said, about it not being the "in" thing to do, in studying maths and related subjects. At least it seems that this is the case in St. Andrews.

Well that seems ridiculous. If you can't accept other people's opinions then don't but don't go around saying you hate people or whatever when it has no relevance to a thread. I believe it is also against the rules to post something solely to cause trouble as that comment is.

There is no need for bitchiness when people are simply exchanging opinions _ I'm sure everyone must be grown up enough to handle that surely.

not intended to offend, merely expressing a view. apologies offered to yourself, perhaps hate was too strong a word where tone cannot be assessed. also probably a little wound up by what registered users are commenting on anyway. i do not see that comment as intended to cause trouble, merely an attempt to distance myself from said Unregistered User in order to avoid the obvious "backing my own argument up" claims i would receive. and i WAS actually accepting that person's opinion, with no bitchiness, 2 posts above the one you quoted. please read the whole thread to get a context before going ape at me?

still questions have to be asked, i mean if you do post as an unregistered user its takes a while for the post to make the tread whereas if you are registered its straight up there, minimum effort maximum results.

I was just wondering if there has been any olsen or any other maths lectures spotted around town in reading week so far? i saw olsen walking past the post office on south street on monday, it was like seeing someone famous. i stood there open mouthed starring at him!
