The Facebook

St Andrews has just been added to http://www.thefacebook.com - you should all go and join!

If you haven't heard of the website it's a university networking thing... you set up a profile with loads of information about you and you can put down what classes you take and stuff, and you are connected to everyone else on it from the same university and you can search for and 'friend' people from other universities. America is obsessed with it and we are the first Scottish university (I think) to have been added.

If you want a better explanation than I have given as to what it's all about, do a google news search. Here's one I picked at random if you can't be bothered!

oh no... my friends back in America have regularly reported on how the Facebook has taken over their lives...and they're addicted to it.

I hate it, yet I just registered.

Just out of curiosity, did an Exeter grad bring it over? I think St. Andrew's is the first school outside the USA to get it, and I can only think that a friend of Zuckerberg's got it over. Makes sense that it's at St. A's though, American as the school is! Personally, I think it's great, I'll stay in touch better now that I'm back State-side if I can convince my friends to get on.

I'm not sure... You can request universities to be added so I requested St Andrews and my friends in America who told me about it already had too. I also emailed them because and asked if they could add us because I'd been messing around with it via my friend at USC's account and thought we needed such a procrastination tool... you can never have too many!

Were you here long? It's St Andrews (no apostrophe) and it's a university, not a school.

Just added myself, I quite like the layout of it. Very well designed.

There is no purpose really. Just another website to check. But I've been on it for several months and it hasn't resulted in spam.

So...if any of my friends from last year join, let me know and I'll friend you.

Oh, dear-- I went to university in America, as well, and I can attest to the addictive power of thefacebook. It was especially bad as my other uni was added during exam time . . . quite the useful procrastination tool, though, and indeed quite helpful for anyone with stalkeresque tendencies. You know it's sad, however, when you find out that your friend has broken up with their significant other by the change in their facebook relationship status.

My Calafornian friend holds facebook responsible for her doing jack all work for her finals.

ZUCKERBURG!

Postby arealsinner1 on Thu Feb 03, 2005 12:10 am

He stole my idea! I went to school with Zuckerburg who stole this idea of the facebook from chris tillery (who is probably filing suit : )) and made millions off it! but then, i was going to steal his idea and do this in europe. Now, in the early stages of development he comes along and beets me to the punch! i guess that's why he's at harvard and i'm here :(

anyways, Exonians didn't bring it over (i don't think). anyone that went to school with Zuckerburg knows he was a complete ass and want nothing to do with him...but i do credit him for creating a great site.

Yeah, I was wondering if Tillery would sue over this. I mean, Exeter's facebook was Kris' baby, from his time on the data sub-committee to when he became president. Striking similarities between his and Zuckerberg's versions.

p.s. And to whoever saw fit to correct my mistakes previously ... boohoo

I'm surprised by how quickly people from here have added me - my girlfriend at Sarah Lawrence is already busily posting embarrassing messages on my Wall.
