Getting Marker off of a Comp. Screen

Postby Guest on Sun May 08, 2005 9:01 am

Hello. Would anyone happen to know how to get permenant marker off of a laptop computer screen? I had a bit of an accident just now. Thanks!

Don't quote me on this, but acetone (found in most nail varnish removers) usually gets rid of marker. But the fact it's a laptop might mean that acetone will fuck it up.

Nail varnish remover will probably do it, or anything with acetone in it. It's the solution to all of Chemistry's problems. I don't think that it will cause any other effect on your screen... but don't hold me to that.

Out of interest, how did you manage to do that? It could have been worse, it could have been Tippex.

Whiteboard pens dissolve permanent marker on whiteboards, but I don't know if it would work on an LCD screen. Acetone (nail varnish remover) dissolves almost anything, including permanent marker and the plastic used on the outer layer of most LCD screens, so don't use that.

According to some guy on the internet those alcohol-based glass cleaning pads are the best option: http://macslash.org/comments.pl?sid=4029&cid=59583

Okay, accidents with permanent marker seem to be spreading around St. Andrews since I spectacularly managed to get permanent marker all over my laptop screen...

Anybody know where I might get hold of one of those alcohol-based glass cleaning pads in St. Andrews?

Alcohol. We use it to remove permanent pen from the rotas, which are written on plastic. Water wont budge it, but alcohol will.

I promise! It might be healthier for your computer screen!

Are you mad? LCD screens are coated with soft plastic. If you take a glass cleaning pad to it you'll ruin the screen :(
The alcohol-based pads mister internet was on about aren't abrasive - they're designed for things like lenses that abrasive glass cleaners aren't suitable for.

DO NOT USE ACETONE!!! IT WILL MELT THE PLASTIC! (I know this from experience) Anyway, it is Propanone in nail varnish remover, different stuff.

I thought only Strongbad used 'magic graphics pens' on computer screens...

Yeah! If you want it fixed you could just get The Cheat to call tech support...

I already said deodorent - I've done it before when one of my "friends" decided the best thing for my laptop was a permanent marker cock on the screen, the screen is still fine, and i sprayed some deoderiser on it, not anti-persperant, I don't know what that would do, it's like a powder or something.

Ok, well do you remember what kind of deodorizer it was? Don't want to get the wrong stuff! Thanks!
