Linguistics Society anyone?

Postby BeccaLydia on Sat Aug 06, 2005 2:18 pm

There are a few of us considering starting a Linguistics Society in September and I was wondering whether anyone's interested? We're all going into 3rd year, but would like to meet others interested. Just wondering if there were people who may be interested in joining if we managed to make it work.

I'm not sure what I could do to help but I certainly find linguistics very interesting.

If you go on the facebook and look for Linguistics society, you'll find us there, so feel free to join up. Another question I thought of was whether the society should be affiliated or not. Any thoughts on that? I'm not sure how many members you need for an affiliated society...

Shame there wasn't a Linguistics society when I was there. Would have been interested if there was!

I wondered when it'd be that you popped up :) And I never did make clear, if you do need any help with this society, do let me know.

Twenty. Unlike some people I could name, I don't think it's in the interests of every society on the planet to affiliate to the Association, but as an academic society, you'd probably be better off if you did.

Any events you run are more likely than not to be suitable for inside the Association building, which means that you'd benefit from free room hire, and in addition you could claim funding for your events (under the usual conditions, naturally). You'd also get help and guidance on issues like financing, constitutional matters and elections, and the only disadvantage is that you'd have to run yourselves as any responsible society should do anyway, which hopefully won't be much of a hardship.

This is great! If you want me to let you know when we get it all sorted, please could you email me so I have your email addresses? Then maybe I can find 20 ppl and The Linguistics Society will thus be created :) Thanks Jen - had forgotten you had got it on Facebook. Look forward to meeting you all sometime.

A Linguistics Society and no jokes about Cunning Linguists?

I think The Sinner is going down the tubes.

Well, I'm certainly pleased that there have been so many posts on a thread about Linguistics - so it isn't just me then that's passionate about it!

Good luck with setting it up - by the way, BeccaLydia, have you spoken to Dr Sneddon about it? He'd be a good source of instant speakers if you need them and he could raise interest/awareness of your society in the Department. He's also involved with things like SAILLS and I think - again perhaps an idea for joint events to boost numbers and profiles etc.

Haven't spoken to Dr Sneddon about it yet - it's on my very long list of 'things to do when I get back'. I know a couple of people studying Linguistics at other unis so I was hoping to use them as one source of gaining speakers. The other thing I think Jen and I were hoping would be to sort out maybe one night a week or every other week, when we could meet at a bar/pub, have a drink and chat about/debate/discuss heatedly linguistics.

Maybe we should start a ling debate on here?!

May I also suggest that people interested in joining a linguistics society go to the following link (except I couldn't get it to work):

http://groups.msn.com/LinguisticsSociety

If you join on there, it will also help us keep track of the number of members we have, and we can debate quite freely on there, or even have a live chat :) What would people think of having a website dedicated to Linguistics society? As in our own domain name? I may be able to arrange this for us :)

Ah linguistics - not my own personal interest, though I could certainly find at least one person who would be interested in such a society. Personally, I would love there to be a gin society. I feel that a good G&T is much underrated by far too many people.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but also didn't want to start another one about what kind of society I would like to see come September!

First informal meeting!

Postby BeccaLydia on Thu Oct 06, 2005 9:24 am

Hi everyone who's shown an interest!
Just to let you all know that we're having an informal meeting over lunch on Friday (tomorrow) - 12-2pm (or any time in between, whenever you can make it) at the Tudor Inn on North Street. If you can't make it, drop me an email just so I know you're still interested.

Hope to see you all there!
