Privacy Threat - Facebook

I don't think lots of the users of that facebook have read the privacy policy so I thought of giving you a little taste...

Maybe you should start thinking of moving to a better service. Not to mention that most parts of the code are actually stolen (check online news - facebook lawsuit etc - it's been a year now).

What dear 'username' chose to leave out was this bit:

"If you do not want to receive promotional email from Facebook and/or do not want us to share your information with third parties for marketing purposes, please submit a request by clicking here. We will make every effort to implement any choice you make as soon as possible."

This is exactly the same as 90% of the websites out there where you enter personal details. Ever read "tick this box if you do not wish to recieve..."

Sounds like a standard policy, although it's interesting that in the FAQs about privacy they say, 'Facebook respects your privacy. We don't distribute your user information to third parties'. You then follow the link to the privacy policy, which says, 'We may share your information with third parties, including responsible companies with which we have a relationship'.

I did read that. Try clicking and it will say "Thanks. Your request has been recorded." now you think they will respect your choice ? and how many users you think have seen that ? It's hidden for good reason.

Other services do not have such policies, others do. Try finding a better service. After all facebook is not that good, it's too poor.

Do you think they gave them that much just for little or simple ads ? IT's the information they are buying. People write about their favorite movies,music,tv shows, their political views(!) this is valuable information and it's very dangerous if it is collected by private companies especially when they paid so much money. It was not for fun they are expecting to make much more than that just by using your information.

To be fair most people are taking the piss on facebook so I laugh at any company who tries to use it to collect any meaningful data. Remember which generation facebook mainly comprises, us, the can't-give-a-fuck-life-is-all-one-big-joke generation. Who gives a fuck.

It's not about me. I am using more sophisticated online services but that would never be a reason to suggest that you do not use facebook. Well probably because marketers always want to know what makes people tick and the age group that predominantly uses facebook has some of the highest discretionary spending of any other group. So what if they want to see what people are interested in? When they see how popular "Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good and Want To Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too" group is doing it will let them know where they can market movies. I am all for raging against the machine but there are much better things to be worried about than getting a new two disk special addition of Zoolander.

Meh, everyone knows there's no real privacy any more. If you join a supermarket savings club, they note what you purchase with the card. Similarly, what you purchase on credit gets noted. With everything being so heavily based on technology now, just about anything a person does can be tracked. As for Facebook, personally, I'm not bothered. I haven't received any spam as a result of joining it, and I've been on there a year. If they want to tell marketing companies oh hey, we've got a member, her name is Sarah, she's 22, comes from Georgia, and likes these books and this music, etc, go right ahead. I'd tell any of that to a stranger on the street. As long as they don't start spamming me with ads, I don't really care what they do with my info. But that's just me, and perhaps I should care more than I do.
