Favourite Vocalists (Not Greatest or bestest or one i wank over the mostest)

Postby Zak on Sun Feb 26, 2006 6:22 pm

Right im bjored and work avoiding, so decided to write random shite up here about favourite vocalists.

The great Tomas Lindberg - screaming through the swedish and world metal scene at 110mph, singing in some of the worlds most influential and talented bands and still giving us all surprises today. Seriously if you like your thrash/death/black metal check out some of his work from At The Gates, Lock Up or The Crown. He even has a black metal/electro band called The Great Deceiver who are seriously underrated.
I dont mind admitting i love him, ive even hugged the fella.
Im not getting jiggy, its Parkinsons!

Angela Gossow. Not the best death vocalist by a long way, but for a woman, wow.

And despite her idiocy, Tarja Turunen. She makes it look so easy.

Oh, since I'm going on about women tonight, Kimberley Goss from Sinergy. Bruce Dickinson made woman, oh yes.

I know, I know I bang on about this all the time but:

MIKE FUCKING PATTON! My own personal hero, I have so much genuine love and appriciation of his work. Hell when he joined Faith No More he was described as "lungs on legs". Never has a vocalist so influenced a band, he allowed them to try so many different things (rap, spoken word, death metal, lounge, jazz, prog, gospel) all on one album. I mean just look at how they grew from "The Real Thing" to "King For A Day". The versatility the man has is astounding. His work as of late is even more impressive and avante garde, with Fantomas' "Delerium Cordia" being the DEFINATIVE patton album, forgoing vocals insted choosing to use his voice exactly like another instrument. One of the few living artists I'd call a genius. In fact his influence on one band saw them keeping the shift in direction even after he left, which brings me too...

Greg Puciato - DEP's vocalist and THE best hardcore influenced screamer around today. But he can and does do melodic very very well too.

Mikael Akerfeldt - Do I need to even say a word? I'll give you three: ethereal, haunting, brutal.

John K - Biomechanical's vocalist, channelling the spirit of Phil Anselmo, Ronnie James Dio, and Bruce Dickenson while adding his own unique flavour. Derivative sure, but when it's this damn good who fucking cares.

I came here not expecting that another Pattonite would get here first, but they did (good on yet, Captain_Spanky). I would add a further gushing tribute to Patton's expertise and general talent as a frontman, but I will spare you all.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it turned out that he was Jesus.

pop - Christina Aguilera - her voice can overpower Slayer's amplifiers any day of the week.

rap - Jay-Z - has more attitude than anyone else in the game.

goth - David Gahan - possibly the most imitated voice in the goth scene (albeit mainly a result of all the countless EBM vocalists).

Um...sorry, thought it was obvious that I was being facetious (I merely think reasonably highly of the man (Patton, I mean))

As for the shit slinging, well I think I heard that he did that once, and it was about ten years ago (if it turns out it isnt just an urban legend - like all the stuff about him pissing on people - it was a fucking fake dick). Holding a grudge, are we? :P

BESIDES all of that, he's still a fucking good singer anyway. Blah.

For me it has to be Bruce - amazing range, and I just love the guy. Also James Hetfield gets a mention - not the most technical singer by a long way, but I just love the tone of his voice. Also, a lot of people would disagree, but Zakk Wylde has quite a nice sounding voice, certainly for his style of music anyway.

Not at all, just imagining jesus throwing shit around at his disciples and telling them "Gods say its ok!"

Dallas Toler Wade (Nile). This dude has an unreal growl. Nile has three vocalists but when Dallas growls the low end goes on my speakers

Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage) Uncool metalcore it may be, but this guy can shit over everyone in his genre.

Akerfeldt - wot jez sed

Bruce - just cos

Adam Lineker + Jim Burton. These mother fuckers summon the power of kebabs and throw down an immense king shit time after time.

And of course the best metal vocalist in the world without any shadow of a doubt - DEVIN TOWNSEND. Owns everyone is any genre, period

Just thought of another vocal legend - Maynard James Keenan of Tool and Perfect Circle, able to switch between power screams to melodies and beautiful lyrical poetry. Blends the borders of art and music on stage, he becomes on with the music and projects it out for all to hear.

Another agree, although I'm not so much a fan of Tool. Love APC though.

Also agree with Sir H's mention of Zakk Wylde and Zed's of Tarja.

Have to add the lady Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Creatures. And, though people may TOTALLY disagree with me, I can't NOT mention Aaron Stainthorpe from My Dying Bride.

Aaron Stainthorpe is a great, great vocalist.

On the death metal side though, it has to be Jeff Walker of Carcass. That growl is legendary!

Noone has mentioned any of the older singers, the real vocal legends such as Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Tyler etc.

BRUCE DICKINSON!

Uhm... yeah. Bruce, Freddie Mercury, Clapton, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry, Buddy Holly, Courtney Love. (Probably more but I can't think)

And for dork points, Tia Carerre (sp?)... she can really wail :P
