To Big X who asked the original question: I presume in your asking it, that you're not fat? Well, what do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you perform a narcissistic self-appreciation ritual every morning revelling in the fact that you are not fat?

thats right rufus, i'm not fat. in the morning i see something that i, generally, like. i would like to change the following:
1. put on some weight (not fat, obviously)
2. sort out my skin

i dont revel in the fact i'm not fat, but i'm fairly confident that when my metablism does start to slow down i will keep myself in reasonably good shape, becuase i like to be happy, and i dont think that i would be particularly happy with myself if i was fat and there was something that i could do about it

1. Someone says something mean about how you look.
2. You eat to find comfort.

That strikes me as being just as bad as turning to drink when you want to forget, or "sniffing on snow when you're feeling low", both of which have extremely negative social connotations. We need to make comfort eating just as taboo and "not done" as alcoholism or drug addiction, and then hopefully fewer people will think it's acceptable to do it. If the very act of comfort eating has an aspect of moral guilt attached to it, rather than being a solace, then that will act as a further discouragement, and eating won't be the blissful refuge it may have been.

If someone is overweight, you can bet there will be some emotional reason behind it.

I'm overweight, but it's due to overindulgence and lack of exercise.
I've started doing more exercise and I've found that I don't want to eat stodgy food any more - I'd prefer to eat a salad or something else light.

Perhaps that's just me.

Sorry, that's my fault for not being specific. I should have said 'If someone is morbidly overweight', or even more overweight than is healthy.

I should probably apologise for sounding so belligerent. So, sorry about that.

I just can't be done with the school of thought that if people tried hard enough they would be a healthy weight, have a healthy mentality etc etc etc, and any failure is intrinsically their fault; life isn't that simple.

^^I'm allowing my interpretation of your posts to be coloured by my own opinion, and that's nothing if not iniquitous, so farewell The Sinner, you have served my boredom well.

i'm just curious i suppose. my dad has a massive weight problem which is probably going to kill him. he says he doesnt care because he's happy, but he's not going to be happy when he drops dead from eating a mountain of foie grois and neither are the family. why do fat people keep convincing themselves that everything is fine, or that they've all got some kind of genetic makeup which makes it impossible to shift any weight?

I am sorry to hear that. If you are genuinly curious - people with massive weight problems and people who are/see themselves to be fat can be diffrent. (I am a size 14/16, doesn't mean I am to drop dead any time soon, but could stand to loose a bit, as far as I am concerned.)

Maybe let your Dad see this thread? I think it exibits your feelings pretty clearly, which sounds to me like what you wanted to achive...

But I am no psychologist.

by the way, I like your signiture.
