IR 4th year?

Postby inshaala on Wed May 03, 2006 6:25 pm

Hey,

i am in the process of choosing which IR module i want to do next year (i am already doing a dissertation) so i only need to do one 30 credit module. I am thinking of doing the following and was wondering if anyone has taken these modules and if you could give me some idea of how good they are:

Conflict Management and Resolution

The Language of Politics

Critical Approaches to Security

And yes i know the ballot has passed, i missed the deadline because the IR department cant get their act together and put the deadline for the turning in of forms the day after the lecture on 4th year modules which i missed, thinking we would get at least a week if not more (kinda like last year).

I'm doing the langauge of politics, it sounded ok to me and it looks like it covers stuff we should already be familiar with so it sounds like an easier choice (if there are any of them in ir)

As far as what I got from the meeting, if you didn't submit your form in time then you won't be advised into anything until September anyway, so you've got ages to decide which ones you want to do - if there are spaces left on them.

If its IR it should be pretty easy.

Read a few books, remember some facts, write them down in a structured manner during the test, do the essays at your leisure during term time.

Simple really.

Now correct me if i'm wrong, but this sounds pretty cynical. Let me guess, you were going to end your post with "fInAnCIAL EcOnMiCs iS So hArD MaN tRy dOiNg 3OoO leVel MoDuLES"

You still up revising for macro yeah?

Well, financial is actually a 4000 level module, but anyways.

chill.

But seriously, any art subject like history, IR etc i think are easier. They are a test of your reading and memory abilities. Pretty much anyone doing economics could do IR or history, but a significant number doing IR or history i doubt could do economics, or say maths, or maybe even biology, which is a heck of a lot of work.

Honey, that's fine if you aim for a 10. Us that have our sights a bit higher need to demonstrate some of those funny things called analytical thinking and original thought. Without taking this too seriously, isn't econ just about understanding what it says in the book and following suit?

Rather than lamely asking your friends in cyberspace which of these three modules is easiest, why not ask yourself, which of these arouses your curiousity, your passion your hunger to explore to read widely. Which of these aspects of international relations best expands your knowledge acquired and honed in JH year, or at least which of these sounds most erudite and winning when chatting up an impossibly beautiful tanned twenty-something on your inevitably long and idle forthcoming vacation. DO THE RESEARCH YOURSELF DUMMY!

Well if you are doing an IR dissertation, that means you'll be doing it in Semester 1, which rules out Slomp's Language of Politics course, unless you get special dispensation from your other subject to do both modules in second semester.

grousefanatic - the dissertation may be first semester but it is basically a whole year thing in terms of deadlines... so i doubt doing a 1st semester module will make much difference - unless you are speaking from experience?

oldnag - they all arouse my curiousity in some way. I was merely asking if anyone had taken them and thought "oo that was especially good" because unlike what you want to beleive i wasnt asking which was "easiest" because that doesnt figure in international relations modules. It is easy when you enjoy it because i tell you, trailing through the history of post soviet eastern bloc sent me to sleep this semester, but US foreign policy last year didnt... which would you say was easier? So dont try to be "clever" in judging me or anyone else for someone who is here for an easy ride. Also JH year didnt teach me anything new that i could carry forward to senior honours so you quite frankly dont know what you are talking about.
I am doing research (you dummy!) by posting on here and asking for opinions. And as someone rightly said i do have all summer to work out what i want to do and i will use that time to have a further look at the module contents.
Also you dont know me... that is all i have to say to pretty much everything you just posted which i didnt cover above...

Im pretty sure IR dissertations are due in at christmans, and are definitely a semester 1 option. But seeing as how they have already approved titles and assigned supervisors, i think you'll have real problems arranging one this late.
