Break-up Songs

Postby GuyIncognito on Sat May 13, 2006 7:52 am

What are your best break-up songs? Either the crawl-into-bed-and-cry-for-days songs, or the I'm-going-to-slash-the-tyres-on-your-car songs.

I think 'With or Without You' by U2 or 'Don't Speak' by No Doubt are quite appropriate...

Shed Seven - She left me on a Friday

mainly because she did, in fact, leave me on a Friday and ruin my weekend.

Ben Folds's Song for the Dumped, clearly:

So you wanted
To take a break
Slow it down some
And have some space
Well fuck you too

Give me my money back
Give me my money back
Give me my money back
You bitch

But if you're the one doing the dumping, there's a good one by The Free French:

Look, in my quest for common ground
I've turned the bedroom upside down
And, frankly, most of the living room too
I've made you gifts and bought you flowers
And i've waited up for you for hours
You say my worrying is making it worse

But no, honey it's not me, it's you

Aerosmith: Cryin'

Weird Al Yankovic: One more minute

"I guess I might seem kinda bitter
You got me feeling down in the dumps
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the gas station of love
And I have to use the self-service pumps"

Dilate

Postby kitty on Sat May 13, 2006 10:52 am

Ani Difranco's album Dilate is good for breakups. It has various songs that are applicable: "Untouchable Face (Fuck You)", "Superhero", "Done Wrong", "Dilate". Basically I think she probably wrote the entire album after going through a breakup herself.

Well your not gonna get anything new from the five. Plenty of solo stuff from Ben though, and a few collaborations with various people.

Ben Folds Five rock, Song for the Dumped is definitely a good one.

Alkaline Trio's Stupid Kid is always a good bitter break up song.

I Used To Love Her by Guns 'n' Roses.

And of course Soft Cell's Tainted Love and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye - almost worth being heartbroken so that you can sing along and actually mean it!

Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks. The whole album. I can't think of anything more perfect for a breakup, aside from 'I Know It's Over' by The Smiths.

For me, it depends on the break-up, coz (without even realising) my b/f and I always end up having a song, so the song changes with every break up.
