And here's where I think the unionists are in danger. If the SNP can sell a vision of a brighter, independent Scotland I think people will listen, especially if the only thing they hear from Labour is negative scaremongering about the dangers of independence.

I think this is essentially the point. I agree that the SNP can sell this vision, and are doing so quite well at selling it, but I don't agree that they have any real way of making it happen. It is a nice vision of a happily ever after, of how things can really change, of how it will be better. This is very familiar: anyone remember the New Labour victory in 1997?

I agree that the status quo is not great, but I think that the way to change it is for the whole UK to change, not for parts of it to run away. Afterall, they will still have the same problems, but a few new ones too. Not that I think anyone is offering any particularly good options for change in the UK as a whole either: but experimenting with independence with the SNP, who don't have a solution to the problems, just a vision of the beatiful green grass on the other side, is too big a risk to try, in my opinion.

I've never been to "the south" (and by that, I take it you mean Dumfries and Galloway)

Excuse me but...
WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT MENT TO MEAN!!!

I'm from that "south" as you have so nicely put it.
And I shall tell you this now, I will bring it.
I was born Scottish to a Scottish family, and It IS MY right to be that way!
Do you Insult my right to that?

And as for the "south". Don’t speak for people you've never meet.
I know many an Englishmen you wants an independent Scotland, and they Live in England.
When I'm home I cross that boarder often enough to know that the Scots and English are not the same people, we are in fact very, very different.
A fact that both sides’ acknowledge, and you know what, we at the boarder are fine with that.
I think you'll find there is a hell of a lot of anti-Scottish sentiment in England, It's not banter, and it’s insulting.
So before you go off on one saying I’m anti-English or what not, know this: I’m not. I have many English friends.
And your just an idiot.

I’m sorry but that just how I feel right now.
I’m not in the mood to have to read your style of bull shit

That is exactly the sort of argument that worries me. You fail to grasp the subtleties of national identity.

"When I'm home I cross that boarder often enough to know that the Scots and English are not the same people, we are in fact very, very different.
A fact that both sides’ acknowledge, and you know what, we at the boarder are fine with that."

Tell me, do you honestly believe that there is not a huge, gaping difference between Glasgow and Edinburgh, or Cupar and Craigmillar, or Inverness and East Kilbride; further, that even within those Scottish communities there is huge difference?

The 'us and them' argument is espoused right there. By you. And you can claim you are not anti-English, that's fine, if it makes you feel better, but rarely have I read a post which so reminds me of the sort of narrow-mindedness which is the *only* thing I find difficult about this entire debate.

PS: ascii, you claim there have been no 'smart unionists' helping you understand the other side. I must say, by contrast, neither have there been any smart nationalists. Again another thread has been boiled down to the lowest level.

Also, I would welcome a referendum actually, it might shut your whingeing up, given that you support a party that has never returned more than 7 Westminster seats, has never taken more than 29% of the Scottish national vote at a major election, and whose share of the Scottish Parliament vote has gone DOWN since devolution. Eh?

The SNP has never returned more than seven MPs to Westminster? Hmmm. You might want to check your facts there, flarewearer. In the general election of October 1974, the SNP had eleven MPs elected with a 30.4% share of the vote. Oops. That's more than 29%, isn't it? And in the European election of 1994 the SNP got a 32.6% share of the vote. That's more than 29% as well.

Flarewearer. You've made a personal accusation against me regarding my motivation and it's a piece of rubbish. I'm not here to be told I'm something I'm not without justification.

There will always be casulalties of nations emerging. But you let some allegance to "Britain" mean that Scotland cannot be independent, it seems to lead you to favour anti-independence economic arguments, it's almost a selfish view - to ask whether the SNP have considered what to do with the people who still want to be British. It's the silliest challenge. If you hold dear "Britishness" then keep calling yourself that. Why not, if events head that way, embrace the Scottish Parliament and try and do some good in Scotland, since you don't seem to wish to leave. Put your grievance aside.

You're not really helping the Unionists point other than with those who already are!

The fact that you haven't heard any does not make it true that there is no hostility to the Scots in England. There was a story in the local paper where I live about a man who was in court for beating up someone while shouting anti-Scottish abuse. And that is far from being the first time such a thing has happened.

I'm sorry but is today a special day for you? or were you born with the extra chromosome?

I find it hard to believe that anyone could say they’ve not experienced anti-Scottish sentiment and/or abuse. Even if you don’t live at the border.
I’ve experienced enough of it here in St Andrews at the hands of brainless English fools.
So to say that there is no such thing, and that the English love the Scots with hugs and kisses, is just as retarded as it sounds.

Given that 58% of your colonial masters want to ditch us anyway, I'd suggest your whinging is irrelevant. It seems the Unionists are scared of a referendum - funny that.

Colonial Masters? you see, that is exactly your problem, you see it as a case of "them" and "us". I see it more as "us" and "us. Of course, that's because I'm not a xenophobe like yourself.

This thread has gone way downhill.

The participants, especially Steveo and October, are good examples of why I am no longer interested in this debate. Nobody has the skill to keep the level of debate high and so they resort to name calling, misappropriation of fact and blatant ignorance.

I expect ascii is sad his initial question led to such rubbish, or then perhaps s/he knew that would be the case?

Agreed. Why is the presence of anti-nationality sentiment even relevant? The fact that some people are prejudiced (both sides of the border, and probably all over the rest of the world) bears no significance to the matter at hand. Why not ignore it altogether, seeing as a lot of the debate seems to taken up with proving that one is not baselessly opposed to the other's position, whilst insisting at the same time that the other's position is baselessly opposed to one's own.

More to the point, I just read that there appears to be a majority in both England and Scotland in favour of independence. In a democracy, I think that's the matter settled; the SNP are making huge inroads to gaining support, and thereby independence. I have yet to read up on how they intend to go about settling an independent Scotland, though someone did detail it in the thread earlier.

It could be argued that this thread was never going anywhere but downhill. Both sides have their own hackneyed arguments which don't really have much to do with the issue at hand. I'll make this my own last contribution.

The hostility shown towards the idea of an independent Scotland from most of the unionists on this thread seemed to be best summed up with Malcolm's speil about Scotland being generally, well, fucked. The neds, sink estates et al were an unsolvable problem - an independent Scotland would lead to the same old, same old. Obviously, that's where I disagree. It makes my blood boil every time I see a report from some government department, or the UN, saying that Scotland, and usually Glasgow, is the unhealthiest, most murderous and/or most depreived part of Western Europe, sometimes the Western world. These reports come out a few times a year, and the Labour executive trots out the same replies, about how they'll change this, it's their top priority etc.

What Scottish independence offers is a genuinely revolutionary (in the best sense) solution to this malaise. For people like me, Scotland will never be able to improve itself drastically under the present constitutional arangement. There was a time, when an colonies, trade barriers, and being part of the pre-eminent global economic and military power, allowed Scotland to prosper. This time has now finished. We now have a radically different situation, one for which we are not sufficiently prepared.

Nationalists have a theory to explain what is going wrong here - it's called Leaky Bucket. No matter how much money is poured into the country, and no matter how much money will continue to be put in to it, too much will go to waste. The holes in Scotland are many: There's the poverty, ill health and the shameful existance in our major cities of areas where the life expectancy is less than that of some third world countries. There's the graduates who, after being educated here, with public funds, either thorugh choice or necessity, have to go elsewhere to find gainful employment. There's a pitiful business start-up rate, because it often makes little sense to start your business here, when conditions are more favourable down south. There's an overly large public sector, and a private sector which is beginning to look something akin to a house of cards: branch operations, so easily closed at the mere mention of the word downturn, a still growning reliance on the service sector, with its call-centres, bars, shopping centres and bingo halls which offer no real career opportunities for those employed in them, and which are, of course, only going to be there as long as people are willing to spend money in them. You get the picture. As a result, economic growth, and a general amelioration in living standards just ain't going to happen, until we can address these problems at the root, and patch up the holes, as it were.

Maybe a federal Scotland would an answer, maybe we could just content ourselves with the status quo, and feel lucky we weren't born in Easterhouse or Craigmillar. I think an independent Scotland, freed from the status as a satellite kept in a London axis, able to take all the tough decisions to improve its woeful record card.

What we would lose from being part of the 5th biggest economy in the world, with a seat on the UN Security Council, would be offset by us being able to make our own way in the world, freed from the shackles of great power politics, capitalising on a brand which is known throughout the world. We would not only be able to continue our relationship with England and Wales, with no border guards, but improve our relations with our European neighbours, and those across the pond. Those who wish to see an end to the politics of greivance will see it - we could only have ourselves to blame, and will have removed the 'us' or 'them' equation that currently exists.

It is this international dimension which is the most important to underline. I've never been able to understand why I was being lablled as a parochial little-Scotlander, when the alternative was continuing to be part of what is actually the most inward looking nation in Europe. I want to see Scotland able to look at the world for the first time in 300 years, and go out and make the best of it, and in doing so, make the best of itself.

There, if you got ths far, you are a very saad person, and yes, my spelling is shite.

Ah, you would make a fine politician. A well written post that convincingly argues for the SNP vision. While at the same time entirely managing to avoid spelling out any actual policies.

So, to repeat my question from before: what is behind the vision? An independent Scotland could make tough decisions for itself - but what are these decisions? What is the plan to fix the problems? If you can give me a good plan to fix any of the problems that exist in Scotland, that requires independence to implement, then I will vote for it.

Being about as non-economical as is practically possible, could someone explain (in laymen or technical terms...we've all got the internet, we can look up tricky bits) precisely how anyone is in a position to sort national debt and what potential solutions there are anyway?

I agree largely with the sentiment of AlenWatters' post, but still fail to find suitable evaluations from both/any sides of the problem. I suppose, a more taxing question to ask (as) a nationalist would be: What are the forseable problems with Independence, what could go very wrong?
