Question for the PC literate

Postby cam on Wed Nov 14, 2007 12:58 am

Suddenly, for no reason all the icons on my pc desktop have become blue... it's really annoying me and I don't know how to get them back to their translucent old-self... anyone know?

They're normally only blue when they're clicked on - but they stay blue all the time.

Is this something that stays after you restart the computer?

My desktop does that sometimes as well.

It would be helpful to know some of the details of your computer. Are you using Windows XP?

Yes it's XP Pro. How do you get rid of it - it's a super irritant.

Is it actually the same as the click thing or is it just the text that is blue?

If just text do:

1: Right Click My Computer
2: Select Properties
3: Click Advanced tab
4: Click, in the Perfomance box, Settings
5: Ensure "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the dekstop" is selected.
6: Click Apply

If it is the whole thing, like when you click, you need to do this.

1: Right click on the desktop
2: Follow the menu for arrange icons by
3: Deselect Lock Web Icons On Desktop

If that doesn't work try:

1: Go to the control panel
2: Double click Display
3: Click on the Desktop tab
4: Click on "Customize Desktop"
5: Click on the Web tab.
6: Deselect "Lock desktop items"
7: Click Ok
8: Click Apply

end

Thanks for the help - but this doesn't seem to be working either.

It seems to be with the colour thing if you do-
control panel
display
desktop
customise desktop
then select any colour it changes the display of the icons - i dont want a colour unless i click on the icon.

I have just realised there is a virus in the My Computer file according to Bullguard... this could be the problem.

Anyone reccommend some good software as my Bullguard expires in a few weeks?

Norton or McAfee?

Not Norton, definitely not Norton. Not sure about McAfee either. AVG Free is one of the best.

Remember that AVG doesn't have a firewall though.

I use sygate personal firewall, its free.

Or to solve all your problems; buy an Apple Mac.

I highly doubt that an Apple Mac would solve all of his problems. That's quite a claim, Jim.

OS 10.4 had more serious security issues than Vista.

I have no idea if Lepper is secure though.

It would be unwise to claim that one OS is "better" than another in terms of viruses/holes/stability issues.

Two simple mathematical issues give rise to atleast part of MS OSs difficulties.

1. More users = more bugs found
2. More hatred = more deliberate attempts at breaking it.

Success is MSs downfall. We are actually starting to see a similar downturn in the popularity of Macs. When they were the weak underdog they could do no wrong. Now that they are corporate whores they are begining to do no right.

Swings and roundabouts. What?

Installing Norton is like inviting a strange irritating man into your house whose only purpose is to get in your way if you try to do anything. You can't ask him to leave politely either, you have to wait until the middle of the night and club him a few times with an iron bar and then dispose of any bits you find lying around into the recycle bin. And unless you move house you'll keep finding bits of him for months.
