It's never been clear to me (and I'm an utterly insane headphone fan) what exactly differentiates holophonic recording from binaural recording in technical terms, but yes, binaural is awesome, awesome stuff.

[Binaural is phase differentiated HRTF stereo, Holophonic sound uses an array of microphones and post-processing to downmix to the stereo imaging.]

Its most clearly shown in these sorts of demonstration recordings where you hear things like matchboxes being shaken. My personal favourite is the virtual barbershop. (Just google it, its been spread everywhere now) [turns out that virtual haircut is the same one]

There are also many music albums which have been partly or wholly recorded in binaural. Radiohead - In Rainbows, Pearl Jam - Binaural (obviously) and Pink Floyd - The Final Cut all have binaural sections to name some more famous examples.

Also check out Quiet American for some frankly stunning binaural field recordings.

The binaural recording links thread on head-fi.org is the probably best single resource if your interested in hearing more and obviously wikipedia binaural for learning more.

That was absolutely amazing. If only games could utilise this. You'd be ducking every time a sniper took a shot at you in Call of Duty.

You couldnt use the same techniques for positional audio in games, the way sound is processed for headphones at the minute is really pretty good though. Any game, even if its older or doesnt have EAX can still sound really immersive if you set the cards settings correctly.

I might be confused here but in games isn't it the idea that everything is happening in front of you on your screen and so to have binaural sound you'd be tempted to turn around in your chair rather than making your character turn?

Not really, sure just get a decent surround sound system and in games like Battlefield 2 you hear tanks trundling downhill behind you etc
