What do you call the lecturer to get his attention?

This message board is for discussing anything in any way remotely connected with St Andrews, the University or just anything you want. Welcome!

Good grief I never thought Wikipedia would have to be called in to give etiquette guidance but:

The Times states in its style guide that: "Ms is nowadays fully acceptable when a woman wants to be called thus, or when it is not known for certain if she is Mrs or Miss."[6]

The Guardian states in its style guide that: "We use whichever the woman in question prefers: with most women in public life (Ms Booth, Mrs May, Miss Widdecombe) that preference is well known; if you don't know, try to find out; if that proves impossible, use Ms."[7]

That all sounds fair enough to me. To not know this says a lot about who you are.

Sounds fine to me, and a quick check suggests Debrett's agrees, and that'll do for me.

I would just say 'excuse me'... it's polite and safe.

Titles can be a bit touch and go. I think most academics in the department where I work now would have no problem with students using their first name, but you always get a few who prefer 'Professor' or 'Doctor' (make sure you get it right!).

I do not accept being lectured by those without a Ph.D as acceptable at this University, so I've never gone to those ones.

This is daft. Some of the best teachers I have ever had at University have been plain old 'Mr' or 'Mrs'. I also know some complete idiots with PhDs.

Some of the posters on this thread are amongst the latter, no doubt.

Just as a brief LOL,

when I was younger (really young) I used to think Ms was short for Master so whenever I filled out forms and stuff I'd always tick this box. Go me!

Another inspired post.

I'm still laughing from that email where you seemed upset that I accused you of trolling the sinner.

Pedant! :)

The title they choose out of those appropriate for them, then, if we're splitting hairs.

Bulls*. Their 'proper title' is the one that THEY choose, not the one you have somehow decided best applies to them. That's just sheer arrogance, and will mark you out as ignorant and rude.

Then I wish you to address me as "Your Majesty", clear?

Ms is legitimate and my preference, and therefore it is my title. I don't think it's PC bollocks. It's simply affording women the same courtesy as has been available to men for centuries.

I am a raving feminist, but still.

(The raving is a joke, by the way. Who doesn't consider themselves a feminist? Not anyone I'd have any respect for.)

Tommy can you hear me?

I don't consider myself a feminist. I believe in genuine equality not feminism and there is a difference.

Miss always strikes me as what you call young girls/teenagers. It seems slightly patronising that you can continue to be called Miss just because you've not married.

After all, men cease to be called Master beyond a certain age, regardless of their marital status. (Though Specsavers has decided I've not reached the age at which Mr becomes appropriate, yet.)

I think Ms is the safest, and least patronising one to start using. If the person prefers to be known as Mrs, or Miss, then so be it. Starting with those makes assumptions about their personal life, which may not be appreciated.

I much prefered being a Master to a Mr. Mr is so bland whereas Master was different and tended to be only on nice letters.

The implication here is that being a feminist automatically demands respect? It's hard to respect anyone who is pedantic enough to give you a bollocking for being born with a different chromosome and using an additional letter in your precious title. There are more important issues in the world, grow up.
