80 credits in Senior Honous?

I'll be returning to St Andrews from my year abroad this September going into Senior Honours, and am seriously considering taking up another language. I've had the chance to learn some solid Mandarin while abroad and would love to learn Russian next year, especially as China/Russia is also the area of the world I'll hopefully end up in after I graduate (and given that this is my main interest in IR).

Now for my question - is it at all possible to take 80 credits in Senior Honours? Are fourth years allowed to take first year Russian Language classes? Or is there any chance I could just sit in on them and do the work, but not for credit? I'd be highly motivated to do this, even with all the work involved...

I'll bug my advisors with these questions as well, but was wondering if any of you sinners have any advice or experience? Thank you !

I'm not sure about doing 1st year modules, but I did an extra 30 credit module in my fourth year in order to make up credit, and that worked out ok.

Yes. (In my experience), extra credits are perfectly fine. The trick is to deomnstrate to your advisor that you're keen, well motivated and that you will cope with the extra workload. (Noting that you recognise it will take extra effort is quite worthwhile).

Be wary though, it likely will affect your grades in other subjects, but if you're keen and it really is extra work (not dividing the same amount of work between more modules) then you'll be fine. This is maybe even more likely if it's something you enjoy and not just for extra credits.

The only issue I can forsee is with the Russian folks, but even then I don't imagine it being a major issue.

Some subjects allow you to do a dip across to another subject for one module so I'm sure it's possible. Also, you could do an evening language class, I'm not sure if they have Russian but they certainly have Mandarin.

I've done extra greek classes but not for credit. he just doesn't put us on the class list, but we do all the work anyways. I'm 3rd year too.

If they don't let you take extra credits, maybe you could do an evening language course? I believe that ELT run various kinds throughout the year. It won't show on your transcript, but you can still put it on your CV.

They do show up on your student record if you select the box that says you want to be assessed.

Speaking as someone on the MMath programme which (sort of) requires you to take 150 credits a year in your honours years, I assure you that taking 80 or more credits in a semester of honours is do-able. And do-well-able too.

I think it can depend on your advisor. I know in seond year a girl i knew in IR was refused from taking an extra 20 credits. The advisor for senior honour is a sound guy so you might be able to convince him, although personally i think you are crazy , especially as languages require you to go to tutorial like classes 4 times a week - well 1st year spanish did.
