On another bop related note, how did the silent bop go last night? I decided i couldn't afford to pay £3.50 to find out whether it was fun to dance in the bop to headphones :-P

From the crew's perspective - last night's event was a huge success. Thanks to everyone that came along and were a part of it. I know RaveSoc and the Union DJs really had a great time, in no small part thanks to the atmosphere the crowd created.

It was a really surreal experience to be in the middle of a crowd singing two different songs at the same time. What was even better was seeing the crowd still huddle round near where the speakers are, even though the PA was obviously not used. A good social experiment for psychologists I guess...

Last night we made an 'island' in the middle of the floor to operate from, and it looked pretty good, so the 'blinders' that munchingfoo mentions elsewhere in the thread are no longer in place. If you want to check out the Ents Crew's hard work (the Island) AND have a great night, why not head into the Union for the 70s Disco night tonight. It's only £2 and as always, the drinks are as cheap as normal!

Ah, an answer that turns into an advert, though unfortunately it clashes with rocksoc so i wouldn't be going anyway ;-)

I've been in bops with the island there before, although according to orudge that just shows my age since he doesn't remember there being one since he came to St Andrews :-P

Well, yes sorry - seemed too good an opportunity to pass by really ;-)

Yes, apparently the last island bop was in 2005. I'm not advertising when I say it looks pretty cool. I really enjoyed last night, not least as being on stage often loses whatever atmosphere there is in a bop.

That's because there simply hasn't been one since before September 2005. ;)

Talking of lights, what one earth are those big blindingly white light arrays doing behind the DJ stand?

Its like going to a Redneck disco lit by trucks.

Not a fan of the blinders, eh?

We'll do something different tonight :-P
(On that note, the DJs weren't a huge fan of them either, given that they threw off about 18 kW of heat.)

I was sure there'd been an island bop layout more recently than 2005 - more like towards the end of 2006? I'm sure the Hawaiian-beach-themed bop they did during that week of themed bops in May '06 was done like that?

erm these blinder things...would these be the incredibly annoying bright lights up on the stage last night?

LOVED the las bop but dear me I HATE them blooming lights!!! looking increasingly more worse for wear as the night goes on does not need illuminating...although I suppose the blinding aspect prevents you from actually seeing the carnage...still I don't like them!!

I think they should have put that giant fan from the main bar somewhere in the bop - or a few of them! I had such a great time but it was SOOO warm!

All in all - good job last night - I really enjoyed it! Perfect end to a great year! (and I really wanna see this island thing...I missed it)

Music tonight was shocking. Steve Savage should be allowed to DJ. So much filler no killer. So much of it sounded the same, and only three decent songs at the end. Where were the classics? So disappointed.

Where was the CHEESE?

Postby Bizarre Atheist on Sat May 31, 2008 10:29 am

It was the last bloody Bop of the bloody year!

There should have been fromage splattered all over the walls! We wanted 90s crap, tunes from musicals and a mood dictated by stuff your Dad would play at a school disco!!

Let down.

There had better be some cheese at the Grad Ball to satisfy the cheese quota of those poor graduating monkeys, and perhaps a cheese quota next year.

I wouldn't say the music chosen was bad as such. However i was in the belief that it was supposed to be a request bop? Quite sure a lot of the stuff which was requested in the facebook event and on here wasn't played.

Oh and those blinder things are terrible, just make you hot and blind you as already stated.

(When i say a lot i mean the high majority, i understand not all of it can be played but quite sure basically none of it was played.)

The big fans were in venue 1 and were on, as were the main venue fans in the roof. However, the sheer number of people last night just made it hotter and hotter. Sorry about that!

Yeah, considering that it was the last bop of the year and possibly the last one ever for some of us, there were way too many remixes and way too much dance/techno/whatever genre it falls under.

I definitely agree that the last bop should have been about the cheese, the songs that you always expect to hear at the bop. I have nothing against bops playing new things but last night wasn't the time for it.

I was a little disappointed - I kind of wished that the techno (?) had been broken up at least with cheesy songs. As it was, all the techno stuff just blended together monotanously (between midnight ant 1.30am anyway, the last three songs were good. But . . no '500 miles'!'.

Why wasn't 'Cower in The Dirt, You Mortal Scum' played?

All that daft punk? Wasn't it just Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and Kanye West's lame sampling of said song?

I admit, One More Time may have also played but not so sure of my memory of that one (it may come from another bop or merely from my imagination :P).

I do remember being fed up when the Kanye West version came on - if he knew he was going to be playing that then he could have skipped the original version, at least for another of daft punk's singles. But then i was a bit fed up with all the remixes by that time anyway :-P

One More Time was played after the Kanye West song, or the other way round, as I recall.

I generally enjoyed the bop, but a bit more cheese would have been nice later in the bop - there was a bit before midnight, but after that it seemed to be mainly dance. While I do rather enjoy dance music, it's nice to break it up.

It was worse for that Joseph Haydn's The Creation was not played in its entirety.

A few daft punk songs got played in a row toward the beginning of the Bop, because a Daft Punk CD got stuck in the CD player :-)

And the decision not to play cheese was made by the DJ, based upon his perceived feedback from recent bops. He also specifically requested the blinders.
