Cheap/free things to do in London?

Postby Guest on Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:37 pm

My new boyfriend is taking a half day off work tomorrow, and I've been given the job of finding something inexpensive to do in London from 12.30 until around 7pm- any ideas? Given the weather, a walk around one of the parks is out and I'm not sure he's a Tate Modern/other museum kind of guy. There must be millions of things to do, but what?
Thanks!

You can always go and see a show/matinee at the west end. Tickets usually start going cheap around 10am when the theatres know how many empty seats they have for the day and so long as you dont mind what show you want to see you can get some really good deals!

I know you say he's not a museum kind of guy, but the British Museum has something for everyone in it, and it's free admittance.

Go to Brixton. If you didn't know it's a quaint village at the end of the Victoria line populated by people who look and sound distinctly Jamaican, but aren't. Among the least expensive things to do there is get mugged, but if you have a bit of spare cash you can also buy drugs or participate in a riot.

Also, liking the "new boyfriend" phrase. What exactly did you do with the old one? Common excuses like losing him down the sofa or dropping him in a river don't cut the mustard here young lady.

Thanks for all your responses - the date has been moved to Monday, so I luckily have a couple more days to plan! And to Hennessy - very amusing; the "new" in "new boyfriend" was meant to convey the fact that the most obvious free thing for a couple to do isn't necessarily on the cards, although I'll bear your suggestions as to how to be lose a boyfriend in mind for future reference.

Walking along the Thames can be quite lovely. There are book stalls under one of the bridges but I cannot remember either which bridge or which days. Maybe someone else can provide that information!

Not particularly unusual, but you could head to Camden market or Covent Garden (the latter is quite expensive to eat at though). Or Edgware Road for some Shisha. Knightsbridge is rather nice too.
