Functionality Poll.

Postby Duggeh on Fri May 01, 2009 3:57 am

I am assured by Fawksie that despite evidence to the contrary, that there is some mysterious fault with my computer. :ninja:

Most forums, when you are typing in the quickreply box (one of those would be awesome), or a replybox, allow you to press CTRL-B or CTRL-I to activate the [BOLD][/BOLD] and [ITALIC][/ITALIC] typefaces respectively (and CTRL-U for underlined and so on...)

On The Sinner, this functionality is broken and the button combination in question loads up the favourites, or bookmarks, window, column, options, drop down bar, etc, of the browser.

I have tested this with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera.

The results are almost identical: On The Sinner it doesn't work. On other forums it does.

The exception is Safari which just sits there like a dumb shit no matter what I press.

However. By pressing SHIFT-ALT-B on ones keyboard. The Sinner does activate the [BOLD][/BOLD] tag.

If one uses this key combination on other forums?

One gets the bookmarks/favourites menu/window/list. o.O

I should like other users of this website to let me know what works for them, so that I may confirm either that my computer has an utterly inexplicable and nonsensical ailment, or that The Sinner forum settings have got a box somewhere that is ticked to the wrong option.

Are all the other forums you visit non-phpBB forums, such as vBulletin? CTRL-B doesn't work on tt-forums, for instance, which is phpBB too. Perhaps you should direct your requests to phpBB.com? Not sure there's much we can do to fix things here, you see, if it's a phpBB-wide problem.

*over head*

Whats the difference? I assumed that when the sinner went from being green and moved to what it is now it adopted some kind of standard.

I don't visit a legion number of forums.

I use a Mac, and when I press ctrl+B, it goes bold.

Ctrl+ B or Ctrl + I works for me. I'm on a Mac using Safari if that makes any difference.
But then again, I could just be saying that to annoy people...

Control + B = 'Organize favourites'

Control + I = 'Favourites'

Shift + Alt + B = bold tags (but not round the word I've highlighted, they appear randomly in the middle of the word or occasionally at the end)

I've never actually tried using keyboard shortcuts on other boards; I always assumed they didn't work. I type them myself or use the buttons above the post. I'm using IE on a PC.

There isn't one standard piece of software that runs all forums on the internet. We use phpBB. There's also vBulletin, Invision Power Board and SMF, to name all the most popular PHP forum packages.

As Owen has pointed out on the other thread, phpBB only specifies part of the chord in its code, and uses the browser's default accesskey setting to complete it. In the case of Firefox running on Windows, that's shift+alt. If other forums have managed to make their code respond to control+whatever, then they're using dirty hacks to deliberately circumvent the standard, and are forcibly catching keyboard shortcuts that were designated for browser functions instead of site functions.

Go and try pressing control+B in a reply at http://www.phpbb.com/community/ please. Then we can determine whether it's an issue with phpBB or with the Sinner specifically. Could you also quote the software versions of the forums you say it works on?

I can assure you that there isn't some magic tick box that we've forgotten about that's going to make it work the way it works on head-fi.org, for example. Nor will it ever be made to work here the way it works on head-fi.org, for the standards compliance reason outlined above.

I shall shut up forthwith. And fester lightly in a pool of my ignorance and shame. Apologies for my forthright pedantry (although this is the sinner, home of pedantry). :ninja:

You can change the Firefox access key to Control locally if you wish. Enter about:config in the Address Bar, search for ui.key.contentAccess and change its value from 2 to 4.

Good to see a Chrome user. And a torrent pirate :ninja:

Ctrl + B and Ctrl + I do nothing for me, but I am not bothered by this.
