The trouble is "calvinist" has become a by-word for strict. It isn't Calvinist, it's non-conformist with a calvinistic based theology. Evangelising doesn't go against the idea of pre-destination. Calvin evangelised.

Pre-destination merely says that God knows what path your life will take, whether you will be saved or damned. The means of that saving is justification by faith alone. Put simply, God knows whether you have true faith before you do, and He knows whether you will be damned before you do. He doesn't prevent you from sinning nor does He prevent you from doing good. But doing good without faith won't save you. Since you don't know whether you are damned or not the idea is to seek knowledge of God and belief in Christ because while you may not believe now, you might believe later and that might be the point at which you are saved, but only in your mind, for to God you were saved all along.

It's a really, really complicated piece of theology but it is not, as Philipp Melancthon feared it would be seen as, a licence to do whatever you want in the belief that it doesn't affect what will happen to you after death. It is true it won't affect what will happen, because God already knows you will do this and therefore already knows you are damned. Basically you can't play games with an omnipotent, omniscient God. It's all based around the idea that we will all sin, but that it doesn't matter if we do because we all do it. What matters is whether we believe in God, and believe that Jesus died for our sins. If we believe that we will endeavour not to sin out of love of God. Since love is irrational, we are not doing good out of any selfish desire to be saved but merely out of love. Therefore it is not our good deeds that saves us but our faith. God already knows which of us has faith and which of us doesn't, but because we don't know, we should live our lives as if we had free will because from our point of view we do. Only we really don't.

Clear?
That is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

Mrs Ross came round my flat the other day searching for the previous resident. I said she had moved. "Well we all have to 'move' at some time," was the enigmatic reply. She then handed me a leaflet, so that I would be "prepared".

As I type this, my television is being drowned out by one of Mrs Ross's ilk. He's outside my house (on the streets of Glasgow) preaching through a megaphone. There's a Gospel Hall round the corner, you see, but scant yards from the Madressa. Sigh.

In about fiteen minutes I'm going to go out there and nail him to a cross.

Well, it is the traditional response.

It's only going to Mrs Ross's church that saves you. Until my mate does that, she's as damned as the rest of us.

That's not the message I've heard Mrs Ross spreading! In fairness (and since I don't think Mrs Ross frequents these boards!) maybe I should clarify what she's trying to say (which is also what the Bible says!)

It's not going to any church that saves you - that's why your friend who's involved in 3 churches can't assume that that makes her "OK". Nor would going to the Gospel Hall save you. But at the Gospel Hall you'll hear the Bible's message of how to be saved: through turning from our wrongdoing (sin) and trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to make the way for us to be reconciled to God. In the words of the Bible (Ephesians 2: 8-9): By grace are ye saved through faith...not of works, lest any man should boast; Acts 16: 31: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.

It was rather ironic that she was handing out leaflets outside my Origins of Life exam last year.

I sometimes wish she was more annoying, like the one that occasionally preaches in Church Square. Then I could say the "I'm gay, you think I'm going to burn in hell, sod off" that I think every time I see her, and which, to be fair, is hardly misrepresentative of her views.

Why is it that us Christians are always seen as telling homosexuals to "burn in hell". Just because we disagree with homosexuality doesn't mean this. The bible teaches against sex before marriage, against drunkness, etc. These are all sins, and Gods message is for all sinners. I think unfair stereotype is placed upon Christians as hating homosexuals.

If it is a sin, and Christianity does not agree with it (as you have stated, smallmonkey) - what else is there for homosexuals?

There's doesn't seem much point in disagreeing, if homos get to go to heaven anyway, surely? If that was the case, why not leave the gay community alone, and let them be?

Fucking chrstian cow should be shot - nutter that she is. We should all embrace evolution, survival of the fittest - which means purging ourselves of wasters like Ross and, of course, neds. I've always been one to support a cull of humans, after all we have culls of seals and deer - why not humans? We're all animals after all, and humans do much more environmental damage than any other species.

To be fair, Marco only referred to Mrs Ross's views on homosexuality. And she does believe they will burn in hell. She lets them know...

If there is a God up there worth anything at all, I'm certain He understands what gay people go through, and how pathetic people are who piss them off.

If I were to believe in an afterlife, which I don't, I would imagine that all good athiests (and poofs too) would get to heaven. I don't believe God, however you conceive him, is that petty. I think it would be a very cruel and vindictive God that would make someone born gay and then send him to hell. In fact, God being omniscient/omnipotent, etc, I think it would be very cruel of him to send anyone to Hell. Why create people if he's going to send the vast majority of them to eternal suffering and damnation in hell. That's pretty sick and fucked up. I don't believe in hell more than i don't believe in "heaven" if you get what i mean.

Mrs Ross and friends have been responsible for some pretty atrocious leaflets. I believe there was even one detailing the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and actually showing gay people burning in hell, and I'm not easily offended, but that sort of shit is fucking bad.

Just retaliate by

1. Ignoring her
2. Telling her Satan said to give him a call
3. Print your own leaflets informing her that in St. Andrews, fundamental lunies are burned in a far more immediate way.

I never saw her this year. Not even once. I'm rather disappointed. I read about her on the Sinner way before I got here last September, and now I'm going away again without a sighting. Oh well. I guess I can live without some crazy woman telling me about how I'm probably going to burn for eternity. :)
