University Challenge

Postby Eliot Wilson on Fri Dec 05, 2003 12:16 am

As the captain of the University of St. Andrews University Challenge team, I should advise readers that our first-round match, against City University, will be televised this forthcoming Monday (December 8th), at 8:30pm on BBC2. Tune in!

How do you choose people for the team? my friend's cousin did it once and he said it was just a case of "who wants to do it?" and then they chose the first 4 that answered.

It was considerably more rigorous here. Eloise Govier and Ralph Covino - to whom considerable credit should go - organised a preliminary quiz round in the Union, which was attended by sixty or seventy people, from whom the top eleven were then interviewed and five (four team members plus a reserve) were selected to go forward to the official University Challenge interviews. From there, Granada - who produce the programme for the BBC - chose the twenty-four teams who would compete in televised rounds.

Oh yeah - I was going to let everyonr know about that. A friend of mine who was on the team has been terrorising everyone she knows to watch it! :)

Anyone know if it'll be shown at the Union?

Has the team lineup been made public, or will we have to wait till Monday to find out who's representing St Andrews?

I can't think who you mean...

No, team is entirely public. Besides myself, they are: Hugo Rainey; Hope Fotheringham; and George Bulmer.

Just thought I'd bump this thread back up the order, lest anyone forget the impending TV event...

Mr Wilson, you appal me. I thought that if anybody in this town respected traditions it would be you.

Where was the negative score? where was the worthy-of-entry-into-the-record-books low mark? Where was the shame heaped upon this institution.

You may have won this round, but at what cost the the historic and traditional reputation of this University?
