A Northern Ireland club maybe, but why do you have to bring unionism into it?OK, I know that's a stupid question, but I came here thinking I'd get away from all that stuff.

I know we're all at uni, where we're free to start our own societies and voice our opinions but it'd be good if you didn't bring sectarianism into this town. I've met loads and loads and loads of people from N.I. here but not once have we talked about politics- and I'd prefer it that way.

What does sectarianism have to do with it? One can be a Unionist regardless of one's denomination.

Exactly. My Unionism is not based on religion at all. It is a purely secular choice about what is good and bad, what is democratic and what is not.

Good for you, but you can't deny for a second that religion and politics are inextricably linked in Northern Ireland.

Indeed they certainly are linked. But secular Unionism, if encouraged, is a good way to disengage the two. If a club was formed there might be elements within it who thought more about religion than secular politics and fairness, but I think they would be in a minority.

The Conservative and Unionist Club already cover this.

What, exactly, would be the point in such a club if there is a previously-existing society which covers that area?

If the Conservative And Unionist party caters for Unionists why do they do so badly in NI elections?
Anyway, a Unionist club would provide some light hearted relief for Ulster students who can't cope with the number of jolly oiarish wannabes from elsewhere in green rugby shirts! nothing more 'serious' than that!

I'm pretty sure that the Conservative and Unionist club here only uses that name for historical reasons, presumably because it was founded about the time when the Conservatives and the Liberal Unionists were in political alliance. I don't think the modern Conservative Party has any doctrinal commitment to Unionism, but I daresay people will correct me.

And why is it a stupid thread, "Picture Guy"?

The Conservative and Unionist party certainly has a membership that is supportive of the Union. But the Irish question is, quite correctly, only a small aspect of their political agenda given that they are party with UK-wide scope. A unionist club would focus on ulster unionist concerns.

Also I'm not sure who picture boy is. But oh well, people will be dicks.

I'd join a Unionist society. Not sure about one tied to the UUP, though; I've rather gone off Trimble.

It would'nt have to be tied to the UUP as such. It could simply be a 'Unionist Club', or something like that.

As an aside, I think Trimble has done a reasonable job, and Northern Ireland is a better place now than it was before 1999 (excellent), albeit one in which some of the most depraved murderers in the world walk the streets (terrible).

There you have it, the split personality of the contemporary Unionist.

Why is it terrible?

What function of justice would be satisfied by keeping them locked up?
