apparently drinking about 3 or 4 cups of coffee a day can reduce the likelyhood of you developing late onset diabetes mellitis by nearly 30%!

well... tea still has anti-cancer effects due to its anti-oxidant content, so its still better, but... well done coffee!

That's actually really good, as all the coffee I drink will probably cancel out all the sugary food that will give me diabetes.

That upsets me. I drink coffee mainly in the hope that it is doing me damage.

'sugary food that will give me diabetes'

surgary food will only give you diabetes if you eat so much that you end up rather obese. i don't think there's any link between eating sugary foods & getting diabetes except in the above case.

diabetes mellitis, is linked to diet, but also has important genetic links....

two identical twins - if one has early onset diabetes, then the other has 30% ish of having it;

if one has late onset, the other has 100% of getting it....

so as to late onset diabetes, dietary sugar is not the only factor to be aware of....

the study i mentioned above was done in sweden, so it may not hold for different ethnic groups.

Did you know that after drinking a cup of coffee, your arteries apparently remain hardened for up to 8 hours afterwards - which is the time it takes for the caffeine to leave your body?

Coffee also increases a man's fertility - the strength and endurance of sperm is far higher in moderate to heavy coffee drinkers than in those who abstain - but decreases a woman's fertility.

That is music to most male computer scientists ears. On second thoughts, does Irn Bru have the same effect?

I much prefer tea to coffee, but that is not to say I don't regularly partake of a Costa to ease the passing of two hour lectures.
However, are there any detrimental effects to drinking, say 5-6 pots of tea a day, as is my custom?

I've given up coffee and tea and all caffienated drinks for Lent, and i do have to say, I don't mss it that much.
It was hard being over my friends' flats and not having the "essential" cup of tea, but after a few days, I seem to know when my body needs sleep now and when it doesn't rather than having false highs and lows.

Sadly, there are side effects of excessive caffeine consumption, being an inability to sleep at night, irritability, jumpiness, etc.

I was reading a biography of Stalin recently, and his first wife, who suffered from anxiety and depression was prescribed by her doctors (who I guess didn't know better at the time) great amounts of caffeine...she eventually comitted suicide after having one too many panic attacks, brought on by her excessive caffeine consumption.
